QuestChat with Jason Brown
System Safety Engineer, Wright Flyer
Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA
[ Sandy/NASAChatHost - 2 - 08:39:32 ]
Welcome to today's Quest Chat with Jason Brown! The chat will begin in
about 45 minutes (9:30 am, Pacific, 12:30 pm, Eastern). Be sure to read
Jason bio's before coming to the chat-- http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/aero/wright/team/brown.html

Some great advice from Jason's bio: "...but don't be surprised if something
you learned years ago, and never thought you would need to know, will
prove to be invaluable for solving a problem. If someone had told me in
the eighth grade that one day I would be working at the world's largest
wind tunnel on rotorcraft and aircraft models and the Wright Flyer, I
wouldn't have believed them!!!"

RE: [MrsMock/MontessoriSchoolofCorona]
MSOC is looking forward to another Wright Flyer project chat! :-)
So glad you could join us for another chat!!! Jason will be here to chat
in about 5 minutes...
[ Sandy/NASAChatHost

Jason is here and ready to chat with you today. As the System Safety Engineer
on the Wright Flyer Project, Jason makes sure that the equipment being
used to drive the airplane model's motor is safe, so that people don't
get hurt and the airplane doesn't get damaged. Rather than waiting for
equipment to fail, Jason tries to predict what may go wrong before it
happens.

Hello, everyone, I'm here, and ready to take your questions
[ Jason - 14 -

RE: [Michael-Mrs.Fox/StrattonHighSchool] How do you spend
an average day?
Hello Michael. I usually get in to work quite early, about 5 in the morning.
This allows me to take care of any messages or work I have to do without
interruption. Then, at 6:30, I go to a meeting of the tunnel mechanics
where they coordinate the work for the day. If they need my help, I work
with them. Otherwise, I go to my office and continue with other work,
such as doing Safety Analyses of upcoming tests.

RE: [Leslie/4thgrade-Mrs.Mock/MontessoriSchoolofCorona] Hi,
Jason nice of you to chat with us today. I am here with Alexis McGuire,Randy
Hoffman and he is my twin.
Good morning Leslie! Do you have a question?
[ Jason - 18 -
09:41:16 ]
RE: [Alexis/4thgrade-Mrs.Mock/MontessoriSchoolofCorona] What
subject did you like in 4th grade.Did you like any sport when you were
little?
Alexis, I liked to read and do math.
[ Jason - 19 -

RE: [Michael-Mrs.Fox/StrattonHighSchool] What do you like
about your job?
Michael, The best part of my job is the variety. Now that the Wright Flyer
test is done, I'm now working on a new test that looks at the effect of
ice on the tail of an airplane.
[ Jason - 22 -
09:45:08 ]
RE: [Jason] Alexis, I liked to
read and do math.
Alexis, I don't think I did this until later, but when I was young I loved
to swim.

RE: [Randy/4thgrade-Mrs.Mock/MontessoriSchoolofCorona] What
kind of saftey kits do you use ? If you were in 4thgrade again what would
you study the hardest?
Randy, In my job I use a lot of tools, mostly on the computer to do my
studies of what could go wrong in a given test. If I was in the 4th grade
again, I would study everything! Now is the best time to try out a lot
of things, and see what you like the best.
[ Jason - 24 -
09:49:14 ]
RE: [Michael-Mrs.Fox/StrattonHighSchool] What do you like
the least?
Michael, The worst part is my commute- I live about 1.5- 2 hours away,
and have to drive to get to work.
[ Sandy/NASAChatHost
- 27 - 09:51:14 ]
Does anyone have any questions about the Wright Flyer for Jason?

Randy, Once you find something that you like to do, work on it the hardest,
but don't forget to try other subject that you may be "forced" to take-
it may just end up being your favorite. This happened to me in college.
I was taking courses to become a mechanical engineer, and took another
course in Xray crystallography as part of my Materials Science courses.
I was quite intimidated by this class. As it turned out, I HATED the Mechanical
Engineering classes, and absolutely LOVED the Materials classes.

RE: [Michael-Mrs.Fox/StrattonHighSchool] If you had it to
do over again, would you take a different career path? Why?
I wouldn't change a thing.
[ Jason - 33 -

RE: [Leslie/4thgrade-Mrs.Mock/MontessoriSchoolofCorona] How
did your wife feel about you being a saftey engineering? Does your kids
like you going to your job? What is your kids faces when you get home?Did
you have any best friends in collage?Have you ever had a bad day?describe
it.
Leslie, My wife likes that I enjoy my work, but is always afraid that
I might have an accident on the way to work. I don't have any children,
just cats. They usually greet me when I get home, and try to lead me to
the kitchedn for their dinner.
[ Jason - 35 -
10:01:39 ]
RE: [Michael-Mrs.Fox/StrattonHighSchool] What general advice
would you give a person interested in this career?
Michael, The best thing to do if someone wanted to become a safety engineer
is to take courses that directly apply- there are some colleges that have
specific curriculum for the safety field. This is not absolutely required,
as long as you take enough general engineering to give you a broad enough
background to handle what might come up.

RE: [Randy/4thgrade-Mrs.Mock/MontessoriSchoolofCorona] In
the chat with the Wright brothers the other day, they told us they didnt
paint the plane at first but painted it silver later so their design could
not be photographed. Did they paint the replica and does paint make a
difference in how it flies in the wind tunnel?
Randy, The model tested here wasn't painted. If the paint is applied smoothly,
this can reduce drag. At air races, they polish the planes a lot to make
them as fast as possible.
[ Jason - 38 -
10:04:34 ]
RE: [Alexis/4thgrade-Mrs.Mock/MontessoriSchoolofCorona] What
would you like your kids like to be? Have you ever got hurt?If so from
what.
Leslie, I've never been hurt on the job.
[ Jason - 40 -
10:07:56 ]
RE: [Michael-Mrs.Fox/StrattonHighSchool] What experience
did you need to be in this job?
Michael, For my current job, I had experience from working on a modification
to this tunnel, plus I had worked on another tunnel modification here
at the Center. In those jobs, I guess I demonstrated my ability to evaluate
the safety of everything from automated control systems, high pressure
air, hydraulics, and so on to get this job.
[ Jason - 41 -
10:10:26 ]
RE: [Leslie/4thgrade-Mrs.Mock/MontessoriSchoolofCorona] Like
how long would you stay in your same job?How long have you been in this
job?Would you ever leave your job?If you would tell me why?I would maybe
want to be an saftey engineering?Do you like your job? What was the first
kind of medecine you used? How does it feel to be a saftey engineering? My
teacher says you dont have to answer all my queistions.
Leslie, I am starting on my 12th year at NASA this month. I really like
my job when I can see that the recommendations I have made are used to
complete the testing safely.

RE: [Jason] Leslie, I am starting

safely.
One of the funnest things I did recently was to help to remove the Wright
Flyer from the tunnel. We lifted it out with a crane. My job was to handle
the tag line on the model, to keep it from spinning. It was like flying
a GIGANTIC box kite.
[ Jason - 46 -
10:13:59 ]
RE: [Michael-Mrs.Fox/StrattonHighSchool] What are some stress
factors of your job?
Michael, Other than my commute, one of the stresses is making sure that
I haven't forgotten something in my safety analyses that could lead to
an accident if it is not corrected.
[ Jason - 47 -
10:15:02 ]
RE: [Michael-Mrs.Fox/StrattonHighSchool] Are there any benefits
with the job?
The best benefit is getting to work on so much neat stuff.

Leslie, I would hate to leave my job. There is a lot of variety of things
to do, and this is very enjoyable.

RE: [Michael-Mrs.Fox/StrattonHighSchool] How many hours do
you work a week on average?
Michael, I work a split schedule- 9 hours a day for 8 days, and then an
8 hour day. This allows me to take every other Friday off (and I don't
have to drive...)
[ Sandy/NASAChatHost
- 53 - 10:22:34 ]
EVERYONE: There are just 5 minutes left in our chat today. Jason will
answer the last two questions (Alexis/Michael), then he has to go back
to work.
