Hello and welcome to today's Aerospace Team Online chat with Mina Cappuccio
from NASA Ames Research Center! Mina works in the area of propulsion airframe
integration (PAI), which is the science of installing propulsion systems
or engines on airplanes. Hello and welcome to today's Aerospace Team Online
chat with Mina Cappuccio from NASA Ames Research Center! She is part of
a team that is involved in the NASA High Speed Research (HSR) program.
The program is part of an effort to develop the technology needed to design
and build a commercial high speed civil transport (HSCT). HSCT aircraft
would then be able to transport people 2 to 3 times faster than airplanes
we fly on today, such as 747s.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 10 - 10:01:21 ]
RE: [Camillo] 1) What is the Main
difference between this Aeroplane and the Concord or the Tu-144
Hi Camillo, The HSCT is in the same class of airplanes as the Concorde
and TU-144. The difference is the speed, number of passengers, and the
efficiency of the airplane.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 11 - 10:02:53 ]
RE: [srinivas] Good morning,i'm srinivas
here.I would like to know whetherdelta wings can give more stability during
flight for all transport planes.
Good Morning Srinivas, It is not the a delta wing can give more stability
during flight. The delta wing helps in the speed you can fly at. The horizontal
tail, vertical tail, and canards is what helps the stability and control
of an aircraft.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 15 - 10:05:26 ]
RE: [srinivas] in any way, do you
think the compartmental interiors ,pressurised individually, can reduce
the risk for lives of passengers during plane crash?and how about designing
floats for the whole body of the plane, which can be inflated by the pilot
in any case of emergency?and supported by a row of parachutes ofcourse.
I am not sure what you are stating can really help reduce the risk for
lives of passengers during a plane crash. It is always possible. I am
not an expert in this area. You probably can learn more about this from
other engineers on the Aerospace Team Online.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 18 - 10:06:10 ]
RE: [srinivas] what are the safety
measures the present transport planes have in order to save the lives
of passengers in situations like mid air collision or blast or engine
failure or crash in to the oceans?do you think they are up to the desired
standards?Do you think a body design modifications or accessories like
pressurised individual seats with oxygen and parachute supply is required
for the future, in view ofincreasing demand for air travel in future?
Again I am not an expert is air safety. At least not yet. Hope to get
into this area in the future.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC

RE: [Marcos] i am marcos , and i
am from argentina well i dont know how to start , but the first question
is what was your first job ? sorry my english
Hi Marcus, You are doing fine with your English. Hope all is well in Argentina.
My first job was with Boeing in Seattle. I worked in the Military Airplane
Division in the Inlets Group. I designed and analysed inlets for military
aircraft. The anaylsis I did was either using computer codes or experiments.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 22 - 10:10:02 ]
RE: [Camillo] 2) And what is the
advantage of this Aeroplane compare to the Concord
The HSCT can hold up to 300 passengers. It can fly at Mach 2.4, which
is faster than the Concorde. It has more efficient engines, better emissions
that won't ruin the Ozone layer. It would cost less to fly on it.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 23 - 10:11:34 ]
RE: [Camillo] I am Italian Citizen
and now i live in Ames and i steal prepearing the TOEFL and the GRE to
enter in the Ph.D. programm in Aeroplane Design at the Iowa State University.
Great Camillo, I hope you do well in on the TOEFL and GRE exams. Iowa
State has a very good graduate program in aeronautical engineering. Do
you plan to stay in the states or return to Italy after you graduate?
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 24 - 10:12:47 ]
RE: [Camillo] 3) When is planing
to be the first test flight of this Aeroplane
I am sorry to say the HSR program got cancelled and ends this week. I
don't know when it will start up again. If history repeats itself it probably
will start up again 15-20 years from now. Unless Boeing decides to actually
build it.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 27 - 10:14:14 ]
RE: [Camillo-DanioniCamillo/M.DAeroplaneDesign]
I would like to stay in the US to work in my field to improve my knowledge
in the field.
I have been told that Italy has an institution very similar to NASA. Do
you know what it is called and where it is located?
[ Oran/NASAChatHost

RE: [Camillo-DanioniCamillo/M.DAeroplaneDesign]
Sorry for my bad English
Camillo, you're doing a great job!
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC

RE: [Marcos-marcospass] i read a many books
of conquest the space and i ask me if nasa could build a space ship to
send a human to mars or build something like a big space station, is a
little fiction but i think that the tecnology is big
The area of space transportation is very broad. There is a lot of research
going on in this area. Most of it on unmanned space vehicles. I am trying
to learn more about it too.
[ Oran/NASAChatHost
- 35 - 10:18:38 ]
RE: [MinaCappuccio/ARC] Who else is online. I was told
there were 7 people signed up for this chat session.
Mina, at this time, Camillo and Marcos are online with us. We hope our
other registrants show up shortly!
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 36 - 10:19:11 ]
RE: [Camillo-DanioniCamillo/M.DAeroplaneDesign]
No i dont know where is located the institution in Italy similar the
NASA
I can't remember the name of it but it is supposed to be located in southern
Italy.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 38 - 10:22:46 ]
RE: [Oran/NASAChatHost] Mina, at this time, Camillo

I wanted to tell Camillo, Marcos, and Srinivas that I am happy to talk
with them. Are you all in college? What year are you in and what do you
plan to do when you graduate?
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 41 - 10:25:16 ]
RE: [Camillo-DanioniCamillo/M.DAeroplaneDesign]
A question is possible to meet with you to talk a little bit about
Aeronautical Engineering because here in Ames i dont have friend and it
will be nice to meet with new people.
Camillo, I would be very happy to talk with you offline. You can call
or email me at your convenience. Oran is there a way to get my work number
and email address to Camillo? I hope Camillo realizes NASA Ames is in
California in the Bay area and not in Ames, Iowa. But if Camillo ever
comes to CA, I would be happy to meet with him.

RE: [Marcos-marcospass] sorry i dont know
well use this browser, i read the book apollo 13 and i see the film ,
and think if nasa want or could travel to moon again , i ask this to alejandro
san martin he works in jpl , and he said that he believe that in the years
later could be possible
I agree with you Marcos. I think in years to come we probably will go
back to the moon and in the future go to Mars. I feel that the space station
is the first step to learning how to survive in space for long periods
of time.
[ Oran/NASAChatHost

RE: [Camillo-DanioniCamillo/M.DAeroplaneDesign]
Thanks in advance My E-Mail adress is

Camillo, we will forward Mina's contact information to you soon. Thanks
for your interest!
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC

RE: [Camillo-DanioniCamillo/M.DAeroplaneDesign]
I think that this project his very interesting but in the future not
many people budget can permit to them to take so expensive treep
Yes, I agree. Right now the Concorde is very expensive to fly on. Part
of the reason why is that it is not a very efficient airplane. The HSCT
of the future would have to be very efficient and the price of traveling
on it could not be any much more than the current airfares charged.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 49 - 10:31:33 ]
RE: [Marcos-marcospass] my father is teacher
of math in the university of Buenos Aires and he work in the development
of system with artificial inteligence, i am 25 years old and i am work
in helpdesk of a channel of Tv , and i want to introduce this system to
the channel.
I think that artificial intelligence is an interesting area. Many people
are moving into this area. The future in computers and society is to automate.
AI is the area to get into if you are interested in contributing.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 51 - 10:33:00 ]
RE: [Camillo-DanioniCamillo/M.DAeroplaneDesign]
What do you think of the TU-144 I heard that Boeing and the NASA use
this Aeroplane for Atmospheric research.
Yes. As part of the HSR program NASA purchased a TU-144. We spent a lot
of money to retrofit it for the purpose of doing atmospheric research.
NASA gave money to Boeing to do most of the work. They collected a lot
of information for us.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 52 - 10:34:44 ]
RE: [Marcos-marcospass] i must said to you
congratulation , first because you are a representative of the humanity
and i like a simple student said that all members of nasa must continue
work hardly because i think that you are an excellent example
Thank you, Marcos. I enjoy working for NASA and being in the filed of
aeronautical engineering. It was a goal of mine since I was young to work
at NASA and on airplanes. I appreciate your kind words.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 55 - 10:37:10 ]
RE: [Camillo-DanioniCamillo/M.DAeroplaneDesign]
Practically itn the Tu-144 was installed only a new Engine but all
the structure remained untouched
You will probably find many papers and journals written up on the TU-144
and its mission for NASA in the future. Being at Iowa State, you should
be able to find these articles.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 57 - 10:38:39 ]
RE: [Marcos-marcospass] yes i like very
much AI but here in Argentina and in south American there a little interesting
in space , i like it very much because my father is continue writing document
about IA and system to computers and satellites, but one say my dream
is visit nasa and see the instalations
Marcos, You need to make it a goal and strive to reach it. All NASA centers
are open to the public. They give tours and have interesting exhibits.
And if you are really interested in space, you can always try to work
at a NASA site or even become an astronaut. Don't limit yourself.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 59 - 10:41:11 ]
RE: [Camillo-DanioniCamillo/M.DAeroplaneDesign]
I heard that in the US not many people want to became Designer of Aeroplane
why and that is not a popular field? But i like this profession practically
is my life. I need only a little beet of practical experience in that
field
I think there are a lot of people in the US that want to work on airplanes.
Some do and others don't either because they see more money in another
field or are afraid to pursue their dreams. Right now the area that is
hot is computers. Aeronautical engineers are a rare breed of people. Usually
it is passion that individuals have in them.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 61 - 10:42:26 ]
RE: [Marcos-marcospass] by your profile
you work hardly and here all that you do is really excellent and think
that your activities must show to th world
Thank you. I hope the work I do on my next project will be just as exciting
if not more than on the HSR program.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 63 - 10:43:52 ]
RE: [Marcos-marcospass] yes one they nasa
came to argentina and they show the first astronaut of Argentina , and
he said that he became an astronauts when he one day saw the moon in a
big sky and the dreams are the dreams , i imagine when you send a space
ship to the space , you must feel excelent
The first astronaut of Argentina must be a great role model for many children
in Argentina. I hope that the education system and industry support science
and math.
[ Oran/NASAChatHost
- 64 - 10:46:06 ]
Marcos and Camillo, we would like to remind you to fill out our short
survey after today's chat, at http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/qchats. Thanks!
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 65 - 10:46:13 ]
RE: [Camillo-DanioniCamillo/M.DAeroplaneDesign]
What CAD system do you use in the NASA to project an Aeroplane
At NASA Ames that are several CAD packages that get used. Like EMS and
Unigraphics. Boeing uses CATIA and Unigraphics.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 68 - 10:49:50 ]
RE: [Camillo-DanioniCamillo/M.DAeroplaneDesign]
What have to be the quality on an Designer of Aeroplane to succeded
in his field.
You need to be good at math and sciences, of course. You need to go through
a good aeronautical engineering program. Work on as many projects as possible
to gain the experiences. Broaden the scope of the work to include both
computational and experimental jobs. If you can fly airplanes, that is
even better.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 71 - 10:52:04 ]
RE: [Marcos-marcospass] do you see or talk
once , jim lovell or other astronauts of the era of 60??
No, I have never met any astronaut personally. I did get to listen to
several speak on their missions. The most interesting person was a cancer
research doctor who became an astronaut and spent time on Mir doing experiments.
I can't remember his name. He was so enthusiastic about the work he does
and being in space.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 72 - 10:53:57 ]
RE: [Marcos-marcospass] here we always see
films and read books about the era of 60 when nasa landed on the moon,
what do you think about that moments??? i ask this my father or friends
my your answer is the representaive of nasa
I think the 60's was a great time for NASA and the world. We discovered
space and how to get beyond Earth. I am sure there will be times in the
future that will be similar. Maybe it will be when we send a spacecraft
with humans to Mars.
[ MinaCappuccio/ARC
- 74 - 10:56:48 ]
RE: [Oran/NASAChatHost] We have approximately 5 minutes
remaining in today's chat with Mina. We can accept some final questions
at this time.
Camillo, tell me about your family. I know Marcos' dad is a professor
of math at the university in Argentina. How many brothers and sisters
do you have and are any of them in the math or science field?
[ Camillo-DanioniCamillo/M.DAeroplaneDesign
- 85 - 11:03:51 ]
My sister is a lawyer but now after she is graduated she went to study
at the Conservatory because she has a beautiful Claraturno voice. My Father
and my mother helped my and my sister to much to believe and to study
what you like. And if you begin something you have to reach to the end
also if you dont like.

RE: [Marcos-marcospass] yes i will publish
this in a school magazine , and then the children could read and could
dreams that one day they could learn the world of today. i think the next
years maybe i will go to Los Angeles and take a lot of pciture, for the
magazine of school ,well i must go to work ..i hope you have the best
of best in your proyect and maybe one day go to there.Good luck
Send us the article. Maybe it can be posted on our web site.

RE: [Camillo-DanioniCamillo/M.DAeroplaneDesign]
Thanks for the interesting information that you give us. In the end
my motto his. "We are born to make dream reality" And the important in
the Aeronautical fields is to do the work for interest for love of the
passion of fly high higher. And is not important the many but his important
the result the dream of all the life that became reality.
Hope to hear from you soon.
