Hello and welcome to today's Aerospace Team Online chat with Charles Stangeland
from NASA Ames Research Center. Charles Stangeland is an intern in the
machine shop. He is currently working with his mentors to prepare for
the High Speed Civil Transport (HSCT) wind tunnel test. They are making
parts that the tunnel mechanics, facility, or model may need for the test.
[ Oran/NASAChatHost
- 15 - 10:27:42 ]
And now, here is Charles Stangeland to answer your questions.
[ Charles/NASA-Intern
- 18 - 10:28:24 ]
good morning.
[ Charles/NASA-Intern
- 25 - 10:34:14 ]
RE: [MichelleMock/CoronaCA] Is it
difficult to learn to use the machines? Did you have any experience with
similar machines before you became an intern at NASA?
yes I been playing around at home for years. but if your are mechanical
minded it is an easy thing to pick up and learn (computer numerical control)
is a different ball game because you also half to be good with computers.
[ Charles/NASA-Intern
- 26 - 10:34:33 ]
RE: [MichelleMock/CoronaCA] Do you
design parts or just set up the machines to make them?
I do get to do some design work. It's usually because of some problem
that needs to be reengineered.
[ Charles/NASA-Intern
- 31 - 10:38:03 ]
RE: [MichelleMock/CoronaCA] I recently
handled some machined parts at ASU that may some day go to Mars on one
of the spacecraft. These parts were quite detailed and made of aluminum.
They were black and looked almost like plastic. How are aluminum parts
turned black? Do you do that type of thing in your shop? How is it done?
he black coating is called anodizing. It adds a protective cover to the
barrel. We don't do that here. We send that out to be done in a specialty
shop.
[ Charles/NASA-Intern
- 32 - 10:38:07 ]
RE: [MichelleMock/CoronaCA] What
type of jobs can a person do with a degree in Industrial Technology?
cnc machinist, design engineering, general machinist work, cad cam drafting
, computer programming.
[ Charles/NASA-Intern
- 36 - 10:39:54 ]
RE: [Kerri] What are some unusual
tasks you do every day ?
well I do a lot of programming of large machine tool like mills and lathes.
I also run the mills and lathes. They're manually operated.
[ Charles/NASA-Intern
- 37 - 10:41:11 ]
RE: [MichelleMock/CoronaCA] Are math
and science an important part of your job? Do you do much writing as part
of your job?
Science help understand your materials and cutting and math is very important
when cutting to .0005 of an inch
[ Charles/NASA-Intern
- 38 - 10:41:58 ]
RE: [Kerri] How did your parents
influence you to become an intern machinist?
My dad is totally responsible. He is a shop teacher.
[ Charles/NASA-Intern
- 41 - 10:42:49 ]
RE: [Kerri] Do you think Y2K will
have any effect on any experiments at NASA ?
Very minimal impact. We already have gone through extensive testing.
[ Charles/NASA-Intern
- 42 - 10:44:13 ]
RE: [Kerri] Why did you choose this
line of work ?
I enjoy making things with my hand. It also is very challenging to design
some thing that has to work for years to come
[ Charles/NASA-Intern
- 45 - 10:46:40 ]
RE: [MichelleMock/CoronaCA] Are the
parts made in your shop normally made out of metal? What types of material
are used?
We try to use mostly [aluminum] (Al). It is like cutting butter. Stainlesses
are very hard difficult to cut. But sometimes they are needed for strength.
We also use plastic wood graphite, brass bronze.
[ Charles/NASA-Intern
- 46 - 10:47:29 ]
RE: [Kerri] How long do have to
finish your internship ?
already finished my year in June. I'm extension now
[ Charles/NASA-Intern
- 48 - 10:49:50 ]
RE: [MichelleMock/CoronaCA] How long
ago did you graduate from High School? Are you going to school now? If
so, which courses are you taking?
I'm embarrassed to say I'm Leland [H.S.], Class of '95. I'm still in De
Anza JC. I've taken care of my G.E. [general education] and received a
couple of AA degrees and I plan transfer to SJSU next fall.
[ MichelleMock/CoronaCA - 49 - 10:50:08
]
What is the wind speed in the supersonic wind tunnel? Do you have to do
anything different when you construct your stand and other parts to withstand
the wind speeds?
[ Charles/NASA-Intern
- 53 - 10:53:30 ]
the stand that i'm designing is out side the tunnel and shines throughout
the windows and measures the shock waves off the model. Yes, tunnel is
s-sonic
[ Charles/NASA-Intern
- 50 - 10:51:05 ]
RE: [MichelleMock/CoronaCA] What
type of light is used for the light source you are making for the windtunnel?
it is a knife edge. Basically fiber optics spread out in a row.
[ Oran/NASAChatHost
- 51 - 10:51:40 ]
Mr. Sussex's Class, feel free to submit additional questions for Charles
if you have more!
[ Charles/NASA-Intern
- 55 - 10:55:42 ]
RE: [MichelleMock/CoronaCA] How did
you get your intern job at NASA? Do you work at Ames Research Center?
yes I am at the Ames 12 pwt wind tunnel. I got into the internship through
De Anza JC. I just applied for the program and interviewed.
[ Charles/NASA-Intern
- 58 - 10:56:56 ]
RE: [MichelleMock/CoronaCA] What
hours do you work? What do you like to do in your spare time?
I work 20hrs during school 40 out. I like to rebuild old cars trucks and
tractors in my spare time.
[ Charles/NASA-Intern
- 59 - 10:58:08 ]
RE: [MichelleMock/CoronaCA] Do you
have any pets? What kind of pets do you like best?
yep I not kidding 100+ goats 15 pigs 3 horses
[ Charles/NASA-Intern
