Pressing 7
Live From Antarctica

After pressing 7 you will hear:

This message describes the first Passport to Knowledge electronic field trip, Live From Antarctica, which premiered in December, 1994 and January, 1995.

Though the live components are no longer active, this project continues to offer rich and varied on-line resources, four videos, and print support material.

The hour-long broadcasts include:

"The Coldest, Windiest, Iciest Place on Earth", introducing the geology, and climate of Antarctica, and showing how scientists conduct research in this harsh environment.

Program 2, "Life in Antarctica: Then and Now" explores the co- evolution of the continent and its life forms, and looks at penguins, seals and fish.

"Spaceship South Pole" includes the historic first-ever live telecast from Earth's remotest location. The video includes the repositioning of the South Pole by then-18 year old Chicago student, Elizabeth Felton, as well as reports on astronomy and life at the Pole.

"From Pole to Planet" looks at the ozone hole, and research on and under Antarctica's volcanoes and ice sheets -- and how they interact with the global climate.

All four programs are available at cost from NASA Core. Please call area code 216-774-1051, or listen to mailbox number 4 for additional information on ordering videotapes.

An online version of the teacher's guide, informative background files from NSF's Office of Polar Programs, images, Field Journals from a diverse group including scientists, researchers, and support staff, and related links to other Antarctic sites are included at our Web and gopher site.

The LFA Web address is:
