Geostationary Satellites

stay at a fixed point above the earth. They orbit at an altitude of about 22,000 miles and are used for domestic communications.

This picture shows a NASA experimental communications spacecraft, the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS). NASA has been active in the development of the communications satellites from the founding of the agency in 1958 to the present day. NASA has launched several experimental satellites to develop the technology needed for commercial applications.
