SCIENCE AND ASTRONOMY! WE'LL BE BACK TO YOU SOON.

11.	"TODAY ON NEPTUNE AND PLUTO": THE FIRST
INTERPLANETARY WEATHERCAST: VTR (to shoot 4/19/96)
VTR (01:30)
Sequence presents the currently-known facts about both
Pluto and Neptune, in the format of a "weathercast", as if
wind-speed and precipitation were of the same vital
interest to hypothetical inhabitants of Neptune and Pluto
as they are to us on Earth. The images used will be some of
those we return to explore much more fully, and more
scientifically later in the telecast.

(Depending on final arrangements with WRC, we'll need
more or less "weather graphics" and other tv formatting
materials, inc. stings.)

HELLO, THERE. WELCOME TO "TODAY ON NEPTUNE AND
PLUTO".

WHAT KIND OF WEATHER YOU CAN EXPECT ON NEPTUNE
DEPENDS ON WHERE YOU ARE. DEEP DOWN IN THE
ATMOSPHERE, IT'LL BE "HOT AND HEAVY". TEMPERATURES
SOAR TO THOUSANDS OF DEGREES AND PRESSURES WOULD
BUST ANY BAROMETER.

HIGHER UP, TEMPERATURES COOL TO MORE LIKE WE'D FIND
ON EARTH. THERE ARE PROBABLY PLACES WHERE IT'LL BE
RAINING WATER, AMMONIA AND METHANE. IT'S THE
METHANE WHICH ABSORBS RED LIGHT AND GIVES NEPTUNE
ITS BEAUTIFUL BLUE COLOR...

STILL HIGHER, WHERE THE HUBBLE CAN SEE, EXPECT SOME
CLEAR TO PARTLY CLOUDY SKIES. BUT DON'T WORRY ABOUT
GETTING A SUNBURN. OUT HERE, THE SUN'S INTENSITY IS
ONLY 1 / 900TH OF WHAT IT IS ON EARTH.

ELSEWHERE, SKIES ARE CLOUDY -- WITH HUGE CIRRUS
CLOUDS THE SIZE OF ENTIRE EARTH CONTINENTS, MADE OF
METHANE ICE CRYSTALS.

UP HERE, THERE ARE ALSO PLACES WHERE JET STREAMS
BLOW AT OVER 1200 MILES PER HOUR -- FAST ENOUGH TO
PROPEL STORMS FROM CALIFORNIA TO NEW YORK IN LESS
THAN 2 HOURS -- THE FASTEST WINDS RECORDED
ANYWHERE IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM...

WE HAVE NO PREDICTIONS OF "GREAT DARK SPOTS" OR
"SCOOTERS" TODAY... BUT WE'LL BE USING THE HUBBLE TO
KEEP LOOKING IN THE COMING YEARS!

(ON PLUTO)
AS FOR PLUTO... LOOK FOR WIDESPREAD FROSTS OVER
LARGE PARTS OF PLUTO TODAY, AS THE ATMOSPHERE
CHILLS OUT AND DEPOSITS ITSELF ON THE GROUND! WATCH
FOR INCREASING BRIGHT SPLOTCHES AS SEEN FROM EARTH
IN THE COMING DECADES.

DRIVING ALL THIS WILL BE FALLING TEMPERATURES. THEY
WON'T BE GOING DOWN MUCH IN THE NEXT HUNDRED YEARS,
BUT ENOUGH TO CHANGE THE PLANET'S SURFACE. DAYTIME
HIGHS ARE EXPECTED TO REACH ABOUT 350 DEGREES
>BELOW< ZERO, WHILE OVERNIGHT LOWS WILL BE
SOMEWHAT COOLER.

WINDS WILL CONTINUE LIGHT, BLOWING TOWARDS PLUTO'S
SOUTH POLE, AND WE THINK THEY'LL BECOME NON-
EXISTENT -- ALONG WITH THE ENTIRE ATMOSPHERE! --
OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL DECADES.

WELL, THAT'S BROADCAST TELEVISION'S FIRST-EVER
INTERPLANETARY WEATHERCAST. OVER TO YOU, BILL..."

12.	BILL: LEAD TO HST & WEATHER TAPE: LIVE/STScI
(00:20)
GUTSCH:
THANKS, DAVE JONES, BOB RYAN AND WRC-TV, FOR THAT
MOST UNUSUAL FORECAST!
chapter graphic, with WEATHER highlighted: pop-on
IN THE FIRST PART OF TODAY'S PROGRAM, WE'RE GOING TO
LOOK AT "INTERPLANETARY WEATHER", AND WHY THE HUBBLE
GIVES US A UNIQUE WAY OF STUDYING THE PLANETS OF OUR
SOLAR SYSTEM.

13.	HST AND WEATHER/VTR (01:30)
"WHAT'S THE WEATHER LIKE?" IT'S A QUESTION THAT
INTERESTS EVERYONE... AFFECTING TOMORROW'S PICNIC,
THIS YEAR'S HARVEST, BECOMING A MATTER OF LIFE AND
DEATH FOR WHOLE NATIONS.

HARSH WINTERS... POWERFUL HURRICANES... SUDDENLY
HUMANS ARE REMINDED OF PLANET-WIDE PHENOMENA
BEYOND THEIR CONTROL.

UNDERSTANDING EARTH'S WEATHER MEANS USING ALL THE
TOOLS OF MODERN METEOROLOGY -- INCLUDING
SATELLITES LOOKING DOWN -- AND MAYBE WE'LL EVEN
FIND MORE CLUES BY LOOKING FAR BEYOND EARTH, WITH
THE HUBBLE TELESCOPE.

OCEANS AND CONTINENTS HAVE A COMPLEX EFFECT ON
EARTH'S WEATHER. IT MIGHT HELP TO STUDY WEATHER ON
OTHER PLANETS LIKE JUPITER OR NEPTUNE, GAS GIANTS
WITH NO OCEANS OR SOLID SURFACES TO CONFUSE
MATTERS.

SPACE TECHNOLOGY CAN HELP US GET THE "BIG PICTURE"
AS IN THESE SPACE SHUTTLE STUDIES OF LIGHTNING.

THE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE FUNCTIONS AS AN
INTERPLANETARY WEATHER SATELLITE WHEN IT LOOKS AT
THE OTHER PLANETS IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD. IT HAS
ALREADY SHOWN US LARGE-SCALE, LONG-TERM PHENOMENA
THAT MAY ALSO ILLUMINATE EARTH'S CLIMATE.

HST IMAGES OF MARS REVEAL AN AVERAGE DROP OF 20
DEGREES IN TEMPERATURE SINCE VIKING LANDED IN 1976.
ON EARTH, SUCH FLUCTUATIONS WOULD BE DISASTROUS...

JUPITER'S GREAT RED SPOT IS A CLOUD COMPLEX LARGE
ENOUGH TO SWALLOW EARTH... AND IT'S BEEN AROUND FOR
OVER 300 YEARS: WHAT EXPLAINS ITS LONG LIFE?

THESE HST SEQUENCES SHOW A STORM ON SATURN THAT
SEEMS TO OCCUR DURING THAT PLANET'S "SUMMER
SOLSTICE", LIKE SEASONAL STORMS ON EARTH, MONSOONS
OR HURRICANES....

LOOKING BACK AT US, WOULD SOME DISTANT ASTRONOMER
CALL THIS EARTH'S "GREAT WHITE SPOT?"

WE'VE BEEN STUDYING EARTH'S WEATHER FROM SPACE FOR
NEARLY 30 YEARS... BUT THAT'S LESS THAT ONE OF
SATURN'S YEARS... AND NOT EVEN A "SEASON" FOR THE
MORE DISTANT PLANETS.

LOOKING FAR AWAY AND LONG-TERM WE MAY FINALLY
HAVE BETTER ANSWERS TO THAT TIMELESS QUESTION...
"WHAT'S THE WEATHER GONNA BE TOMORROW?"

14.	ASTRONOMY AND WEATHER: LIVE/STScI/PBG/LA (03:00)

chapter graphic: THE NEPTUNE RESULTS highlighted
BUT NOW, THE SECOND PART OF TODAY'S PROGRAM LOOKS AT
WHAT WE FOUND WITH THE TWO HUBBLE ORBITS DEDICATED
TO NEPTUNE, HEIDI HAMMEL'S PLANET.

16.	HEIDI'S NEPTUNE RESULTS: LIVE/STScI (05:30)
Presentation uses video stills playback, computer
manipulation, and pre-planned interactions.
STScI kids (1 or 2) stand behind Heidi on stage...
Heidi, BG, Sasha, etc.
HEIDI ad lib presentation: discusses fact that Neptune
looks pretty much the same in 1996 as it did in 1995: no
huge Dark Spots apparent. This gives astronomers a
baseline of what's "normal" on Neptune, and is therefore
very important. What Voyager saw in 1989 and Hubble in
1994 seems atypical. HEIDI will discuss how long-term
observations from Earth's surface also provide valuable
data, extending back before the "Hubble era" began with the
refurbished telescope in 1993. Though of lower resolution,
surface telescopes provide an accurate record of how
Neptune's overall brightness waxed and waned. She will
note that there appears -- though it's not proven -- to be
an intriguing correlation with the 11-year solar cycle.
She'll set the Neptune observations in context by noting
that since Neptune's year (its revolution round the Sun) is
just under 165 years, we've only been looking at it
carefully for the equivalent of "six Earth weeks". She'll
compare that to the one week of watching clouds some
students have been engaged in as part of LHST (see
sequence 30)

PLEASE NOTE: ALL THE CONTENT ABOVE IS SUBJECT TO
CLARIFICATION AND MODIFICATION AT THE DISCRETION OF
OUR "PLANET ADVOCATE"!

YOU SAW THE COMPUTERS UP THERE, CREATING THE
PICTURES WHICH HELP HEIDI UNDERSTAND OUR
OBSERVATIONS... IT MAY SEEM COMPLICATED, BUT AS OUR
TEACHER'S GUIDE POINTS OUT IT'S QUITE EASY TO
UNDERSTAND HOW DIGITAL INFORMATION -- NUMBERS --
BECOME IMAGES.
chapter graphic with IMAGE PROCESSING highlighted
THIS THIRD SECTION OF OUR PROGRAM WILL SHOW YOU HOW.

SASHA:
OUT HERE IN OUR AUDIENCE WE'VE GOT 160 STUDENTS, MORE
OR LESS ARRAYED IN 8 ROWS OF 20... THINK OF THEM AS 160
PIXELS, OR PICTURE ELEMENTS.
camera pans over kids holding up REAR of cards with
numbers stenciled on them
WE'VE GIVEN EACH A NUMBER FROM 0 TO 3, REPRESENTING A
SHADE OF GRAY FROM PURE WHITE -- ZERO -- TO PURE BLACK
-- 3.
randomly, in relatively close-up, the kids turn over the
cards, and we see the grays.
AND THE FLIP-SIDE OF THE CARD CORRESPONDS TO THAT
NUMBER.

the next sequence requires a WIDE, HIGH shot of the
audience, with the camera looking back from the front of
the auditorium, and the camera positioned UP a ladder!!!
BILL:
LET'S SHOW YOU WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU PUT ALL THOSE
NUMBERS AND GRAYS TOGETHER IN AN ORGANIZED WAY (this
is said ironically, at first!!!)
kids rise and shout out their number, turning over their
card as they do it.
5 secs of chaos.
OK, OK...
NOW LET'S SHOW YOU WHAT ALL THOSE NUMBERS TOGETHER
MAKE!
the kids organize their cards more carefully, Bill ad libs
them to get them to hold them in positions that work for
camera, and we see what it looks like.

methane images, as seen on the LHST Web site
GUTSCH:
WELL, I HOPE AT LEAST SOME OF YOU RECOGNIZE THIS AS THE
BOTTOM HALF OF ONE OF THE PICTURES THAT HEIDI WAS
USING... BUT, OF COURSE, MUCH MORE GRAINY. THANKS, KIDS!
HOLD YOUR POSITION FOR JUST A MOMENT LONGER.
cross-fade between the actual picture and the kids with

THIS IS THE ACTUAL PICTURE TAKEN BY HUBBLE...
check some stats with STScI
THIS HUBBLE IMAGE OF NEPTUNE IS MADE UP OF AN ARRAY OF
PIXELS SOME XX BY YY IN SIZE, IN OTHER WORDS Z TIMES
MORE "SENSITIVE" THAN OUR LIVING STUDENT PICTURE OUT
HERE.

AND INSTEAD OF 4 SHADES OF BLACK AND WHITE, HUBBLE
USES N...

THAT'S JUST THE FIRST STEP IN THE PROCESS.

OVER TO PITTSBURGH FOR AN EXPLANATION OF SOME OF
WHAT'S NEXT...

20.	HOW DO WE GET SUCH PRETTY PICTURES?: LIVE/STScI
(00:30)
BILL:
SO FAR, WE'VE JUST BEEN SHOWING YOU BLACK AND WHITE
IMAGES...
kid M-16/EAGLE NEBULA poster-holder shuffles into shot
SO HOW DOES THIS BEAUTIFUL IMAGE OF THE M-16 NEBULA
WHICH IS PART OF OUR TEACHER'S KIT GET >ITS< COLOR?
another kid shuffles into shot, carrying the TIME FOR KIDS
cover (blow-up???)
AND SOME OF YOU MAY RECOGNIZE THIS WONDERDUL IMAGE
FROM THE FRONT COVER OF "TIME FOR KIDS"...

NOW WE'RE GOING TO TAKE YOU BEHIND THE SCENES TO SHOW
YOU HOW THIS PICTURE GOT FROM 7,000 LIGHT YEARS AWAY,
VIA THE HUBBLE, WHICH ONLY SEES PIXELS AND SHADES OF
GRAY, INTO LIVING COLOR IN YOUR CLASSROOM!

21.	DATA INTO PRETTY PICTURES: VTR (01:30)
FIRST, LIGHT FROM A DISTANT OBJECT ARRIVES AT THE
HUBBLE.

DIFFERENT FILTERS PLACED IN FRONT OF THE HUBBLE'S
DETECTORS ALLOW THE TELESCOPE TO SAMPLE LIGHT OF
DIFFERENT WAVELENGTHS -- WHICH WE CAN THINK OF
MORE SIMPLY AS COLORS -- >ONE< COLOR AT A TIME.

THE HUBBLE STORES THAT DATA ON COMPUTER TAPES...
THEN RADIOS IT BACK TO EARTH VIA THE TDRS
SATELLITE, DOWN TO WHITE SANDS, NEW MEXICO... THEN
BACK UP TO A DOMESIC SATELLITE, THEN DOWN TO NASA'S
GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER.

THERE THE SIGNAL'S CHECKED AND CALIBRATED, PASSING
THROUGH SEVERAL COMPUTERS AND CAREFULLY MONITORED
BY LOTS OF SKILLED ENGINEERS...

THEN IT'S ON TO THE SPACE TELESCOPE FOR FURTHER
ANALYSIS AND ARCHIVING, AND FINALLY OUT TO THE
ASTRONOMERS WHO FIRST REQUESTED IT.

RESEARCHERS LIKE HEIDI HAMMEL AND COLLEAGUE WES
LOCKWOOD, OR OUR JUPITER PLANET ADVOCATE RETA
BEEBE AND HER ASSISTANT, AMY SIMON, SPEND LONG
HOURS PROCESSING THE DATA... "STRETCHING" IT TO
ENHANCE THE CONTRAST...

LOOKING AT IT IN DIFFERENT COLORS, TO SEE IF
DIFFERENT FEATURES APPEAR OR DISAPPEAR...

THEN IF COLOR IS IMPORTANT TO THE ANALYSIS, THE
RESEARCHERS REVERSE THE PROCESS BEGUN UP IN THE
HUBBLE, AND PUT THE WAVELENGTHS BACK TOGETHER, TO
CREATE COLOR IMAGES.

THIS IS EXACTLY THE PROCESS THAT HAS RESULTED IN
THE BEAUTIFUL AND INFORMATIVE PICTURES MANY PEOPLE
CALL "HUBBLE'S GREATEST HITS"...

THE HUBBLE HAS SHOWN US NEW STARS BEING BORN...
HIDDEN DEEP WITHIN THE ORION NEBULA...

WE'VE DETECTED GREAT JETS OF GAS, PERHAPS
POWERED BY BLACK HOLES THAT MAY LURK AT THE CENTER
OF GALAXIES...

THERE ARE GALAXIES OF EVERY SHAPE AND SIZE... THIS IS
CALLED THE CARTWHEEL... CREATED BY 2 GALAXIES
COLLIDING AEONS AGO...

HUBBLE HAS SHOWN US PLACES WHERE A STAR HAS DIED
AND EXHALED ITS ATMOSPHERE INTO SPACE...

AND, OF COURSE, IN 1996, THESE SPECTACULAR COLUMNS
OF GAS, LIGHT YEARS LONG, BLOWN BACK FROM NEW-BORN
STARS IN M-16, THE EAGLE NEBULA...

22.	COLOR FILTERS DEMO: LIVE/STScI (01:30)
Bill works with kids at STScI
need large Red, Green, Blue frames and filters
need LARGE hypothetical planet "poster" and place to make
it work...
GUTSCH INTERACTS WITH KID FILTER HOLDERS, etc.
BILL:

WELL, OBVIOUSLY THE HUBBLE DOESN'T HAVE YOUNG HELPERS
RUNNING BACK AND FORTH IN FRONT OF ITS DETECTORS...
AND YOUR COMPUTERS DON'T USE OPTICAL FILTERS, BUT OUR
PARTNERS IN LA HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH SOFTWARE THAT
DOES LET YOU MANIPULATE IMAGES. OVER TO YOU, CAMILLE...

23.	LA KIDS: IMAGE PROCESSING DEMO: LIVE/LA (02:30)
first the kids go through an image processing demo, and
then interact with Heidi as she asks them similar
questions to those posted online about how they can use
NIH image to manipulate her Neptune data: split screen

NOW ONTO THE FOURTH SEGMENT OF OUR PROGRAM... THE
RESULTS FROM PLUTO.

MARC BUIE... PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GO ONLINE AND
READ A BLOW-BY-BLOW OF WHAT YOU'VE BEEN UP TO... WHAT
HAVE YOU DISCOVERED?

MARC BUIE will report that the Pluto results still need
further analysis. At first look, he can see EXACTLY what he
had hoped for -- a large brightening of Pluto's surface. But
he is worried that this may be an artifact of the telescope
(inherent in its resolution and NOT a fault) and these
particular observations, and so is working hard to make
just what he wanted to see go away! He will explain why
this is what good science is all about: being harder on your
own data than anyone is likely to be, especially when you
get what you wanted from an observation. On the other
hand, he is very pleased to see great consistency in most
places with the 1994 data that was part of the press
conference which received international attention in early
March. This means that the techniques he and his
colleagues are using are really seeing the surface of Pluto.
He'll talk about repeatability in science. And he will
indicate that for all this self-scrutiny he thinks that he
can perhaps see a small brightening of one section of the
image which just might be the evidence of Pluto's
atmosphere freezing out that he was looking for.

AS WITH HEIDI, PLEASE NOTE THAT ANY AND ALL OF THIS
CONTENT MAY BE MODIFIED BY MARC BUIE DURING THE
BROADCAST.

STUDENTS MAY WISH TO FOLLOW ALONG VIA THE LHST WEB
SITE, WITH ITS POINTER TO MARC'S LOWELL OBSERVATORY
SITE, TO SEE HIS IMAGES DIRECTLY OVER THE INTERNET AS
HE IS DISCUSSING THEM.

30.	RESULTS OF LIVE FROM WEATHER MAPPING: LIVE/STScI
+ VTR / GRAPHICS (01:00)
BG over animated results of online activity

GUTSCH:
WE'VE BEEN LOOKING AT PLANETARY WEATHER DATA
COLLECTED BY THE HUBBLE, BUT LAST WEEK EIGHTY SCHOOLS
ACROSS AMERICA BECAME WEATHER WATCHERS, IN ORDER TO
SHOW US CLOUD MOVEMENTS AND TEMPERATURES HERE ON
EARTH.
still frames from Web with dates appear one at a time,
from still store:
THIS WAS MONDAY APRIL 15TH...
TUESDAY 16TH...
WEDNESDAY 17TH...
THURSDAY 18TH...
AND FRIDAY 19TH.
begin cycled motion: VTR
PUT THEM TOGETHER BY COMPUTER OR VIDEO EDITING AND
YOU GET A TIMELAPSE MOVIE OF WEATHER MOVING OVER ONE
PORTION OF >THIS< PLANET.
cross fade from 4/17 map to Weather Channel still (all
xferred from our Web site to still store courtesy STScI)
YOU CAN SEE THAT YOU STUDENTS WERE RECORDING REAL
DATA BY COMPARING THE MAP OF WEDNESDAY 17TH WHICH
YOU CREATED... WITH THAT BROADCAST BY THE WEATHER
CHANNEL...

WELL DONE, WEATHER-WATCHERS!

APART FROM SHOWING THE POWER OF COLLAB-ORATION, WE
WANTED TO BE ABLE TO COMPARE AND CONTRAST THE SCALE
OF STORMS ON EARTH AND NEPTUNE.

STScI STUDENT TBD, FROM MARYLAND SCHOOL THAT'S PART
OF THE LIVE AUDIENCE (NORTH HAGERSTOWN HIGH), YOU GUYS
CONTRIBUTED SOME OF THAT DATA, WHAT DO YOU THINK?

STScI STUDENT:
comments on size of clouds, compared to Neptune's white
spots...

ALL OF THIS STUDENT-GENERATED DATA IS THERE ONLINE,
AND WE HOPE MANY OF YOU WILL GO ONLINE AND WORK WITH
THE CLOUD AND TEMPERATURE DATA.

OUR THANKS TO ALL THE STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATED --
WATCH YOUR NAMES FLASH BY LATER IN THE PROGRAM!

BUT >ESPECIALLY< TO THOSE STUDENTS AT HUBBLE MIDDLE
SCHOOL, IN WHEATON, ILLINOIS.

Edwin Hubble photo
EDWIN HUBBLE ATTENDED THIS SCHOOL IN 1906... AND WE
THINK HE'D BE PROUD OF ALL YOUR EFFORTS... AND AMAZED
AT THE TECHNOLOGY THAT ALLOWS US TO GATHER,
MANIPULATE AND DISPLAY YOUR OBSERVATIONS SO QUICKLY.

GUTSCH on camera:
AS YOU CAN SEE, THE RESULTS YOU GET FROM SCIENTIFIC
OBSERVATIONS DEPEND ON THE TYPES OF INSTRUMENTS YOU
USE TO TAKE DATA... AND THOSE ARE ALWAYS CHANGING.
chapter graphic, WHAT'S NEXT highlighted
EVEN THE HUBBLE, 300 MILES ABOVE OUR HEAD, IS NOT
GOING TO STAY THE SAME. HERE'S A LITTLE OF WHAT'S
AHEAD FOR THE HUBBLE... AND FOR SPACE SCIENCE.

31.	WHAT'S NEXT FOR HST, ASTRONOMY, AND PASSPORT TO
KNOWLEDGE? VTR (01:30)
Next Servicing Mission, Pluto Express, Mars Pathfinder
TO KEEP THE HUBBLE ON THE CUTTING-EDGE OF
DISCOVERY, SOME OF THE MEN AND WOMEN WE MET LAST
TIME AT NASA'S GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER ARE
ALREADY HARD AT WORK PLANNING NEW "SERVICING
MISSIONS".

JUST AS IN 1993, ASTRONAUTS WILL TAKE OFF IN THE
SHUTTLE TO GET THEIR "HANDS ON THE HUBBLE". THE 1997
MISSION SHOULD BE LESS COMPLEX, BUT NASA HOPES NO
LESS SUCCESSFUL.

TRAINING HAS BEGUN: COMPUTER SIMULATIONS HELP PLAN
THE TASKS. ASTRONAUTS WILL TIRELESSLY REHEARSE IN
UNDERWATER TANKS, SIMULATING LOW GRAVITY. THEY'RE
DUE TO INSTALL TWO NEW INSTRUMENTS TO IMPROVE
HUBBLE'S EFFICIENCY, AND ALLOW IT TO EXAMINE OBJECTS
NOW OBSCURED BY INTERSTELLAR DUST.

ANOTHER SERVICING MISSION, SLATED FOR 1999, SHOULD
BRING AN "ADVANCED CAMERA", ADDING STILL MORE
CAPABILITY.

WE'RE SURE HEIDI HAMMEL HOPES SOME TIME ON THE "NEW
AND IMPROVED HUBBLE" WILL BE ALLOCATED, ONCE MORE,
TO NEPTUNE.

BUT MARC BUIE MAY SOON GET A STILL-CLOSER LOOK AT
PLUTO. A SMALL PROBE DUBBED "PLUTO EXPRESS" IS ON
THE DRAWING BOARDS AT JPL....

FAR SMALLER THAN MOST EARLIER SPACECRAFT, YOU CAN
JUDGE ITS ACTUAL SIZE BY COMPARISON TO THESE YOUNG
VISITORS. IT'S AN EXAMPLE OF NASA'S NEW "SMALLER,
CHEAPER, FASTER, BETTER" DESIGN PHILOSOPHY...

A WELL-INSTRUMENTED MISSION LIKE THIS MAY BE THE
ONLY WAY TO ANSWER LINGERING QUESTIONS ABOUT
PLUTO'S STRANGE SURFACE AND ATMOSPHERE. EVEN THE
BEST HUBBLE IMAGES CAN'T TELL US WHAT A
SPACECRAFT ENCOUNTER CAN.

AS FOR MARS, WHOSE WEATHER WE TALKED OF EARLIER,
TWO NEW MISSIONS ARE DUE TO LAUNCH IN LATE 1996.
ONE OF THEM, MARS PATHFINDER, IS BOTH A LANDER AND
A ROVER. ARRIVING AT MARS JULY 4 1996, IT'LL USE A
PARACHUTE TO SLOW DOWN, THEN AIR BAGS TO CUSHION
ITS FINAL DESCENT.

FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, A MINIATURIZED ROVING
VEHICLE, NAMED "SOJOURNER" IN A STUDENT CONTEST,
WILL BEGIN TO EXPLORE MARS' MYSTERIOUS ROCKS AND
LONG-DRY SURFACE -- DEMONSTRATING TECHNOLOGIES
WHICH MAY BE USED IN FOLLOW-ON MISSIONS, DUE FOR
LAUNCH EVERY TWO YEARS.

FOR THE LIFE OF THE SPACECRAFT, WE'LL HAVE WEATHER
REPORTS FROM MARS, AND LIVE VIDEO FROM ITS SURFACE!

32.	WHAT'S NEXT FOR PASSPORT TO KNOWLEDGE?
LIVE/STScI (00:30)
BILL:
AND WHEN NASA GOES TO MARS, >YOU< CAN COME ALONG!

"PASSPORT TO KNOWLEDGE" IS PLANNING THE FIRST-EVER
>INTERPLANETARY< FIELD TRIP, WORKING WITH NASA'S JET
PROPULSION LABORATORY ON "LIVE FROM MARS."

YOU'LL DISCOVER WHY SCIENTISTS ARE EXCITED ABOUT
LOOKING FOR FOSSIL EVIDENCE OF POSSIBLE PAST LIFE ON
THE RED PLANET... AND ABOUT ONGOING EXPLORATION THAT
JUST MIGHT TAKE HUMANS TO MARS BY 2018!
majestic ice cliff, and penguins and seals still frames
ALSO NEXT YEAR -- "LIVE FROM ANTARCTICA 2", WITH A
FOCUS ON MARINE BIOLOGY AND GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE...
AND A CLOSE-UP LOOK AT SEALS AND PENGUINS, AND HOW
EARTH'S MOST REMOTE CONTINENT MAY AFFECT US ALL.

GO ONLINE, AND YOU'LL FIND OUT ALL ABOUT "PASSPORT TO
KNOWLEDGE" 'S PLANNED OFFERINGS FOR THE 1996-1997
