My Career Journey
The week before I started college I sat down with my Dad to talk about my plans. He suggested I should choose a major before leaving for school and that it should be something I really enjoyed. I distinctly remember him saying: "You know son, whatever you choose, you will have to be doing that everyday for the rest of your life, so you'd better enjoy it!" It is possible to make career changes later on in life, but basically I think my dad's advice was pretty much right on! When I asked my dad what he thought I would be good at, he said: "Ever since I can remember, you have been interested in rocks. You and your mom wouldn't let me go past a riverbed without stopping during our drives in the country. You have an uncle who used to work with rocks...I think he called himself a geologist."

Field Journal
The Mars Cameras are Critiqued
October 8 and 10, 1996
Two events important to the story of the Mars cameras occurred this week. On Tuesday, the electronic portions of the Mars Surveyor 1998 Orbiter Color Imager (which we call MARCI ("Marcy")) and Mars Surveyor 1998 Lander Descent Imager (MARDI) went through their Critical Design Review, and on Thursday the Mars Global Surveyor went through its Mission Readiness Review.

Reviews are meetings where you present to a group of experts the details of the work you have done, for them to carefully evaluate and to provide you advice based on their own knowledge and experience. It is like saving up all your homework assignments and class projects for a year (although you have also handed them in and they have been individually graded) and then having a meeting with not only your teachers, but other teachers from your school, the principal, and perhaps even professors from a nearby college or university. You get up in front of these people, tell them the results of your work, and they tell you what they think.

What's My Job Like?
I work for Lockheed Martin, a contractor at NASA's Johnson Space Center. My job is to make the scientific and technical information, which the scientists and engineers produce, available to the public in an understandable format. I read technical documents and scientific papers, ask questions about them, and then translate the information into everyday language that you and I can understand. I design and produce brochures, flyers, mission decals, posters, presentations, exhibits, articles and even pages on the World Wide Web. The best part of my job is that every day and every assignment is different. I get to be creative and try new things all the time. I especially like designing Web sites and working on computers. The worst part of my job is having to work mandatory overtime every week and missing my family.
