Chat with Liz Bauer
May 19, l998 - 7:00 a.m. PDT

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 0 - 10:05:01 ]
Welcome! This chat room was specifically set up for the Countdown to Space Day QuestChat May 19 chat with Liz Bauer. (please note the change in dates). Liz Bauer is a hardware engineer for NASA, at the Johnson Space Center (JSC). Her job is to oversee the contractors preparing for the integrating of hardware into 4 racks in the Spacelab. Please read her bio at: http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/neuron/team/bauer.html before joining the chat.

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 1 - 10:05:54 ]
Until shortly before the chat this room will remain closed. Any messages you send will not be visible. Please return at 7:00 PDT (10:00a.m.EDT) on May 19. If you have any questions in the meantime, please send them to chat moderator: Linda Conrad @ lindac@quest.arc.nasa.gov

If you are unable to join us live, you may post a question here. We will try to have your question answered during the live chat (time posted above). You can read the archived chat to see the dialogue and your answer. This chat is in moderation mode so you will not be able to see your question posted now although it is in our queue.

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 4 - 07:01:23 ]

RE: [JOHN/ALKALICREEK] WHAT MUST YOU DO TO BE AN ASTRONUAT ?
Hello John, Liz is at Johnson Space Center where astronauts are trained, but is not directly involved in the selection or training of them. You might want to check the information website about the astronauts, including how they are selected at: http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/pao/public/astronauts.html

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 5 - 07:03:45 ]
Though this chat is the result of an 11th hour change, I trust some of you will make it here - especially the East coast that sometimes finds our west coast scheduling too late! Liz will be delayed a little by a meeting, but will join us as soon as it is over. Please let us know when you come online, and go ahead and submit questions.

[ LizBauer/JSC - 7 - 07:21:31 ]
RE: [JOHN/ALKALICREEK] WHAT MUST YOU DO TO BE AN ASTRONUAT ?
I apologize for being late. As for becoming an astronaut, I know that it takes a good education (college and probably a PhD) and the willingness to pursue it. I know you can get more information (astronaut bios, etc.) from the NASA home page. John, what grade are you in??

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 8 - 07:23:05 ]
Liz, I think John left that question yesterday in the moderation area. I'm not sure he's joined us yet this morning though he is registered

[ LizBauer/JSC - 9 - 07:23:22 ]
RE: [Patti/CJHS] Of all the places you lived, which did you like best?
I liked Albuquerque the best. Luckily, my parents live there again, so I visit and go hiking, see the Balloon Fiesta, and enjoy the city. Where do you live??

[ Patti/CJHS - 11 - 07:25:57 ]
I live in the Santa Cruz mountains in California

[ LizBauer/JSC - 12 - 07:29:10 ]
RE: [Patti/CJHS] Since you now are thinking of going on in your studies, would you recommend more schooling if someone wants to work for NASA?
To be honest, a Bachelor's Degree is all you would need to work at NASA. It would also help if during your college time, you participated in cooperative education (alternate work and school semesters like I did). My desire for a master's degree is really only from personal goals and possible future jobs at NASA or elsewhere. Another degree would not directly help me in my current job tasks.

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 14 - 07:30:05 ]
RE: [rachael/Home-rachael] Hello.
Hi Rachael, do you have a question for Liz?

[ LizBauer/JSC - 15 - 07:30:19 ]
RE: [Patti/CJHS] I live in the Santa Cruz mountains in California
Since you live in Santa Cruz, you can probably relate to seeing mountains everyday (like in Albuquerque)........

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 19 - 07:32:09 ]
RE: [rachaelhome-rachael] Does Anyone know Marc?
Yes, Marc works right next to me here at NASA Ames Quest Team home!

[ LizBauer/JSC - 22 - 07:34:50 ]
RE: [Patti/CJHS] Is that what you miss in Texas? Are you there just because of NASA?
In Texas, I traded mountains for water which is OK. But with that came humidity, which is not so great. Since I work at NASA, there is only one NASA Center I would work at (Johnson Space Center) and that is in Houston.

[ LizBauer/JSC - 24 - 07:35:17 ]
RE: [rachaelhome-rachael] Have you ever been in space?
Nope.

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 25 - 07:35:55 ]
RE: [rachael/home-rachael] Say Hi to her for me. I know her
I will. He just left to deliver some materials for shipping, but I expect him back soon.

[ LizBauer/JSC - 26 - 07:37:20 ]
RE: [sandy/gregory-sandy/gregory] are the computers on the space ship really big?
Computers on space vehicles are not really big. Actually, they try to make them as small as possible because of launching limits (low weight, less space).

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 27 - 07:37:47 ]
RE: [sandy/gregory-sandy/gregory] we are elementary students in NC we are in science lab talking about the launch. Can you answer our question?
Hi Sandy, Welcome! I'm willing to guess that Liz is answering you right now! I notice there are several computers from your school logged on. Do you have more questions?

[ LizBauer/JSC - 28 - 07:38:15 ]
RE: [sandy/gregory-sandy/gregory] we are elementary students in NC we are in science lab talking about the launch. Can you answer our question?
I can try to answer a launch question....

[ LizBauer/JSC - 31 - 07:39:53 ]
RE: [rachael/home-rachael] Can someone chat live from space??
I think so. Linda may know more about that..........

[ LizBauer/JSC - 32 - 07:41:22 ]
RE: [Patti/CJHS] Would you ever want to go into space?
If I could be "Astronaut for a Day", it would be EXCELLENT to fly in space. Since I don't think that will happen, I'm trying to get close to that by getting approved to fly on the KC-135 which offers 45 seconds of zero gravity (floating).

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 34 - 07:42:41 ]
RE: [rachael/home-rachael] Can someone chat live from space??
Actually, there was quite a bit of exchange from space during the Neurolab mission (the one I know the most about since I was working on it). I was surprised that email and even faxing works between the ground and the shuttle! I'm sure there would be a bit of a delay if we tried live chatting this way, but I can't think of why it wouldn't work -- except of course, the time demands on the astronauts during a mission.

[ sandy/gregory-sandy/gregory - 35 - 07:42:41 ]
Hello, we'd really like to hear from you!!:)

[ LizBauer/JSC - 36 - 07:43:15 ]
RE: [Linda/NASAQuest] Hi Sandy, Welcome! I'm willing to guess that Liz is answering you right now! I notice there are several computers from your school logged on. Do you have more questions?
Did you have a question about the upcoming launch or any other NASA topic (my area is life sciences)??

[ rachael/home-rachael - 38 - 07:45:07 ]
Hello Sandy

[ LizBauer/JSC - 39 - 07:45:41 ]
RE: [sandy/gregory-sandy/gregory] Hello, we'd really like to hear from you!!:)
I'm not sure if I have received a question from the NC students.

[ LizBauer/JSC - 42 - 07:47:29 ]
RE: [Patti/CJHS] Will you be working on the flight that John Glenn will be on?
I won't personally work on that mission. He has been in my building for training. There are people in my area that are helping to train him on taking blood, using a bar code reader, and putting samples in a refrigerator.

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 43 - 07:47:41 ]
RE: [rachael/home-rachael] Will you be here all day?
We have a full day schedule posted at: http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/common/spaceday.html Liz will be here this hour, and I will be here every hour that has team members from the NeurOn project on it.

[ LizBauer/JSC - 45 - 07:49:23 ]
RE: [sandy/gregory-sandy/gregory] Liz, what exactly do you do in the spacelab?
I work on a system of racks and drawers. Some of it is to hold other experiment hardware like the rotating chair drawers. I also helped build drawers to stow small equipment and others to help route power and data from the Spacelab systems to the experiments.

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 46 - 07:49:30 ]
RE: [sandy/gregory-sandy/gregory] Liz, what exactly do you do in the spacelab?
Perhaps you could have one of your computers open up to Liz's bio at: http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/neuron/team/bauer.html In there, Liz explains what she does. Perhaps we could find out what specifically is involved in the current mission.

[ rachael/home-rachael - 47 - 07:49:59 ]
Cool>< :o)

[ LizBauer/JSC - 48 - 07:51:20 ]
RE: [sandy/gregory-sandy/gregory] What is the space lab going to do in space?
STS-90, Neurolab, that just flew and landed was actually the last Spacelab mission scheduled. Spacelab is just the name of the module that goes in the cargo bay of the Shuttle. The purpose of those missions is to provide more space and capabilities to do life science, microgravity, and animal research.

[ LizBauer/JSC - 52 - 07:54:16 ]
RE: [Patti/CJHS] During Neurolab we learned a lot about the RAHF, and your work sounds a lot like some of that. Is that right?
Yes, it is similar. Although with my hardware, I don't have to worry about feeding and taking care of rats. I'm more in the area of human science studies. The RAHF was actually built and provided by Ames Research Center.

[ LizBauer/JSC - 55 - 07:55:57 ]
RE: [rachael/home-rachael] Ages?
I'm 28.

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 56 - 07:56:27 ]
We have just a couple of minutes left. Please be sure to ask your questions now.

[ rachael/home-rachael - 57 - 07:56:34 ]
Oh I'm 12

[ rachael/home-rachael - 58 - 07:57:24 ]
So your going but it is all day.

[ LizBauer/JSC - 59 - 07:57:42 ]
RE: [Patti/CJHS] Does that mean then that your racks and drawers have to do with the experiments on the astronauts? Or what do they hold?
Yes, they have to do with the experiments on the astronauts. I provided a data and power routing box for the lower body negative pressure device associated with the autonomic experiments.

[ LizBauer/JSC - 60 - 07:58:17 ]
RE: [rachael/home-rachael] Oh I'm 12
Rachael, where do you live??

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 62 - 07:58:48 ]
RE: [rachael/home-rachael] ----> has anyone died in space <----
I'm sure you've heard of the tragic accident of the Challenger. The risks of space flight are not gone, but NASA ever improving the safety!

[ rachael/home-rachael - 63 - 07:59:11 ]
Va

[ LizBauer/JSC - 64 - 07:59:24 ]
RE: [rachael/home-rachael] Bye Thank you so much!
Thanks for joining the chat! Stay tuned for other guest experts................

[ rachael/home-rachael - 65 - 07:59:39 ]
good!

[ rachael/home-rachael - 66 - 08:00:27 ]
see you again soon i hope

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 68 - 08:01:24 ]
The next scheduled chat is a Women of NASA chat with Joyce Dever. If you've not done so yet, register at: http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/common/spaceday.html

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 70 - 08:03:03 ]
RE: [rachael/home-rachael] will marc be on today
I suspect not though it could be. Today the chats will mostly be covered by the project managers - Marc directs the overall project.

[ LizBauer/JSC - 71 - 08:03:39 ]
RE: [sandy/gregory-sandy/gregory] I'm 13 but kids of elementary ages are also with me. So the drawers you make are high-tech not the kind you find in a dresser?
Yeah, pretty high-tech. They are made of aluminum in a machine shop and then assembled. We do structural analyses on the drawers to make sure they can handle launch vibration.

[ LizBauer/JSC - 74 - 08:05:50 ]
RE: [Linda/NASAQuest] I want to thank Liz for this morning. I know things have been busy on your end, and it was great of you to take the time with us! Bye all.
Thanks for asking me to participate!! It was fun and thanks for the questions.............
