Logo design contest:

Know your Neurolab experiments!

This activity will allow students to team up like the scientists whose experiments will be performed aboard STS-90 and design a logo for "their" team! Our Kids' Corner features a comprehensive Neurolab logo drawn by Crew Member Jay Buckey's daughter Alexandra. Click at left to see full size.

We would invite classrooms to add "Team Logos" for each of the eight scientist teams:

Four teams have experiments using human subjects: Autonomic Nervous System Team, Sensory Motor and Performance Team, Sleep Team, Vestibular Team.
Four teams have experiments using nonhuman subjects: Neurobiology Team, Aquatic Team, Mammalian Development Team, Adult Neuronal Plasticity Team

Purpose: Challenge your students to show that they understand the experiments that will be performed aboard STS-90! In so doing we can:

  • get kids thinking about Great Habitat Debate
  • prepare content for Kids' Corner
  • learn about all of the experiments using peer coaching.
Description: Students will create a graphical representation of the science being performed by one of the eight teams of scientists who have experiments flying aboard STS-90 on the Neurolab mission.

Steps:

  1. Research: Form 8 teams of students to become experts on information relating to one of the 8 scientist teams' experiment groups. Information may be gathered from the background pages at:
  2. Design: As a team, each group should design a graphic "logo" that represents the content of the experiments being done by "their" team.
  3. Report: Students will report to classmates their findings by sharing and explaining their logo in an oral presentation.
  4. Submit: Student designs will be submitted to NASA Quest and posted online. Deadline for submission to qualify for award consideration: January 30, l998.
Award: The design that best represents the experiment content will be selected for each Neurolab team of scientists to be displayed on the appropriate Mission Background page.
