Preparing a refrigeration module
to carry quail eggs safely to the Space Station Mir
by Brad Berch
Here I am in the middle of thermal testing in preparation of the
STS-76 flight.
Many, many hours of testing were required to verify that the CRIM
(Commercial Refrigeration / Incubation module) would maintain adequate
temperatures during the mission.
Quail eggs surrounded by protective foam were placed into a refrigeration
module on STS-76 and transported to the Space Station Mir for incubation.
The quail egg box is placed inside the Commercial Refrigeration
/ Incubation module or CRIM. Refrigerating the eggs will delay embryonic
development until eggs are transferred to Space Station Mir for incubation.
