Meet: Carlton Hall
Ecology Research Scientist
Kennedy Space Center
Webchat and Webcast Archives
Who I am
Hi my name is Carlton Hall. I am Manager of the Ecological
Programs group for Dynamac Corporation, operator of the Biological Sciences
Branch Life Science Support Contract at Kennedy Space Center. Our primary
functions are to ensure Space Port Operations and launch activities are
conducted in a fashion that minimizes environmental impacts to the unique
ecosystems of east central Florida and the Merritt Island National Wildlife
Refuge. NASA, at KSC, has a proud heritage of integrating the technologies
of the Space Program with their commitment to protect, preserve, and enhance
natural resources under their stewardship. Activities that we are involved
with include compliance with environmental laws such as the Endangered
Species Act, the Clean Water Act, and the National Environmental Policy
Act, supporting Space Shuttle launches, and conducting research on wildlife
and fisheries habitats to develop mitigation and impact minimization plans.
As part of the Science Program at KSC, we are encouraged to publish our
research results and to work extensively with other Agencies, organizations,
and Universities. My area of research interest involve the application
of remote sensing technologies to study watershed dynamics (impacts) and
their effects on hydrology, water quality, and ultimately fisheries production
in the lagoons around KSC.
How Did I get here
I got my Bachelors and Masters of Science Degrees
from Texas A&M University where I majored in Wildlife and Fisheries Ecology.
After graduating, I worked extensively in the estuaries and coastal waters
of the Gulf of Mexico conducting environmental sampling programs for the
U. S Army Corps of Engineers, the Department of Energy, the Department
of Interior Minerals Management Service, and the National Marine Fisheries
Service. In 1982, I was lucky enough to get the chance to move to Florida
and work at KSC supporting environmental programs for NASA. I have been
here ever since in what I can only described as the "perfect job". Currently
I am pursuing a Ph. D. in Environmental Science at Florida Tech.
Personal
I was born and raised in Fort Worth Texas, lived
for a while in New Orleans after college and then moved to Oak Ridge,
Tn. before coming to Florida. I have three daughters. Devyn is eight,
Jordyn is 5 and Radyn is 15 months. We enjoy outdoor activities, little
league soccer, playing and coaching, all water sports and music. My wife,
Patrice, is involved with a contemporary Christian band and she and the
girls are active with music at the church we attend.
Advice
My advice to all students is to never stop learning.
At 50 I am back in school and nothing is more rewarding and satisfying
than learning about the world around us and how it works. Find something
you enjoy, learn all you can about it and eventually it will pay off.
