[ Linda/NASAQuest - 13 - 18:02:12 ]
RE: Greg Williams/ SmartLab, Cincinnati Is this just a chat or is it in video as well?
Welcome Greg! Today we are having a text chat only. Thanks for joining us.

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 16 - 18:11:12 ]
We are ready to begin our chat. Welcome Wilbur and Orville! So glad you could join us today- Wilbur is having some trouble logging in, but Orville and I can start.

[ Orville - 19 - 18:14:59 ]
RE: MrsMock/MSOC/CA - Hi Linda and Orville and Wilbur! The kids at MSOC are very excited to hear that they will be able to chat with Orville and Wilbur. They've heard about these chats from their "upper classmen" who have since moved on to Middle School. Now it's their turn! Thank you for turning back the hands of time again and letting the children of today chat with geniuses from the past. Question for the Wright Brothers: How do you plan to celebrate the 100th anniversary of flight?
Good Morning everyone. It's good to be here. My brother and I will be celebrating by watching numerous organizations try to fly replicas of our aircraft. It should be very exciting to watch.

[ Orville - 20 - 18:16:12 ]
RE: Paris5yearsold/MsPerrahsClass/CA How come you wanted to try to fly?
My brother and I wanted to fly because no one was doing it, and it seemed like a great challenge to accomplish.

[ Orville - 23 - 18:18:34 ]
RE: Debra/MsBrown8th/NY You have commented that you were inspired by Otto Lilienthal, and since you were in your 20's when he had his success, how were you able to follow his progress?
Well Debra, Otto Lilithenal was killed in a crash just as Wilbur and I got started. However, we did use a lot of his data that he compiled in his experiments to design our aircraft.

[ Orville - 25 - 18:19:39 ]
RE: Roxie/8th/Homeschooler/MO How long was your first flight?
Roxie, my first flight lasted about 12 seconds and went about 120 feet

[ Wilbur - 26 - 18:19:49 ]
RE: Debra/MsBrown8th/NY You have commented that you were inspired by Otto Lilienthal, and since you were in your 20's when he had his success, how were you able to follow his progress?
The family home library kept lots of books and magazines of a wide variety that carried information on his progress

[ Orville - 27 - 18:20:37 ]
RE: JT5yearsold/MsPerrahsClass/CA Why did you make the wings so long on your plane?
Well JT, the wings had to be 48 foot long to create enough lift to get the aircraft into the air.

[ Wilbur - 28 - 18:21:22 ]
RE: JT5yearsold/MsPerrahsClass/CA Why did you make the wings so long on your plane?
it came as a result of the earlier gliders which had shorter wings. We realized that we needed longer wings on later aircraft to create enough lift to carry a man

[ Orville - 31 - 18:22:00 ]
Wilbur, dear brother, I see you made it to the web chat. Good to see you.

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 33 - 18:23:57 ]
RE: [Orville] Wilbur, dear brother, I see you made it to the web chat. Good to see you.
Hi Orville, Wilbur is still having difficulties with his connection, so we are in phone contact. Hopefully he will be able to type with us soon.

[ Orville - 34 - 18:24:20 ]
RE: Zachary/Cummins Home School OH 5th grade How old were you when you flew for the first time?
Zachary, I was 32 years old when we flew in 1903

[ Wilbur - 35 - 18:24:42 ]
If I remember correctly, I was 33 years old when I made it into the air. I was 36 years old when I actually flew for a distance.

[ Orville - 38 - 18:26:39 ]
RE: Roxie/Homeschooler/8th/Mo How many of your original aircrafts exist today? And is the first one you flew in the Smithsonian?
Roxie, the 1903 Flyer is hanging in the enterance way at the National air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian. The earlier gliders were essentially scrapped, although the fabric from one of them ended up as some little girls dresses

[ Wilbur - 40 - 18:27:12 ]
RE: Anthony5yearsold/MsPerrahsClass/CA Did you use wheels from your bicycle shop on your plane?
Good question! No. We knew we were taking off and landing on soft sand, so we didn't use wheels until several years later

[ Orville - 43 - 18:28:46 ]
RE: Anthony5yearsold/MsPerrahsClass/CA Did you use wheels from your bicycle shop on your plane?
Antony, We didn't use bicycle wheels in the "traditional" sense on the 1903 Flyer, but we did use the smaller hub from a bicycle wheel as a wheel.

[ Wilbur - 46 - 18:31:41 ]
RE: Alicia6yearsold/MsPerrahsClass/CA Did you have any sisters?
Yes indeed. Katharine, however we never called her Katharine or even Cathy. We called her Sterchens. It turns out that is the German word for little sister, schwesterchen but neither Orville nor I could pronounce it correctly, so she became known as Sterchens.

[ Orville - 48 - 18:32:35 ]
RE: Taylor5yearsold/MsPerrahsClass/CA Orville, how did you fly the plane when you were lying down?
Taylor, we would lay on our stomaches facing forward and operate the controls with our hands. We would also shift from side to side in a cradle to pull on the cables that controlled the wing warping. We could see forward well enough to fly, but it would really stretch our necks to try to look very far up. We decided later to fly from a more normal seated position.

[ Wilbur - 49 - 18:32:40 ]
RE: Orville and Wilbur - How did you decide to use wood for your plane?
Because the material was cheap and light. We used Spruce, because it was strong and light.

[ Orville - 50 - 18:33:54 ]
RE: Roxie/ 8th grade/ homeschool / MO Who was the first to come up with the idea of building an airplane, you or Wilbur?
Roxie, Wilbur got the initial interest in flying, but I almost immediately thought it was a good idea.

[ Wilbur - 51 - 18:34:02 ]
RE: What did you study to figure out how to design the glider wings?
We studied math - through triginometry and calculus.

[ Wilbur - 52 - 18:35:05 ]
RE: Sarah/IL/Did you ever think that your discovery would someday lead to space exploration?
No. We had no idea about space. We were only thinking about selling our airplane to the U.S. government.. We didn't think past that.

[ Orville - 54 - 18:36:29 ]
RE: What did you study to figure out how to design the glider wings?
We reviewed as much literature and scientific journals as we could get a hold of

[ Wilbur - 56 - 18:38:32 ]
RE: SmartLab, Cincinnati - One of our students wanted to know what gave you the idea to try to fly?
Our first inspiration was a Geman man named Otto Lillienthal who built a gigantic pile of dirt in his backyard in Berlin, Germany. He made a set of bird-like wings for his arms and jumped off. He died later while

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 57 - 18:38:58 ]
RE: I'm a teacher of a 2/3 grade class. This is my first time joining a chat. Is this a good forum for my students? We are just starting a unit on space.
Welcome! We're delighted to have you with us. We are chatting today with Orville and Wilbur Wright - it is the place for students to get their questions answered.

[ Orville - 58 - 18:39:09 ]
RE: Jeremy/3rd/MrMiller For Orville: I have seen you referred to as Dr. Orville Wright - can you tell us about your education?
Jeremy, the Dr. title is strictly honorary. I actually didn't finish high school. However, our mother taught us a lot at home, and our family always valued learning. I just failed to take care of the formality of actually getting the diploma.

[ Wilbur - 62 - 18:41:20 ]
RE: SmartLab, Cincinnati - Did you always agree on the design of the aircraft? How hard was it to come up with the final design? Did your being Brothers and having such a personal relationship have an effect on the process?
We argued a lot and sometimes quite loudly to the point that people thought we were going to arrive at fist-a-cuffs. It would go on for one hour only to have us switch sides and argue the other's point of view for another hour! After a lot of failure, especially at the end of 1901, but after the wind tunnel test we developed a new wing shape that turned everything around

[ Orville - 64 - 18:42:07 ]
RE: SmartLab, Cincinnati - Did you always agree on the design of the aircraft? How hard was it to come up with the final design? Did your being Brothers and having such a personal relationship have an effect on the process?
Wilbur and I argued a lot to help sift out the right answers. He would take one side, and I the other. This way we could consider all the possiblities. However, by being brothers we knew that we knew that the bond between us was stronger than any arguement.

[ Wilbur - 65 - 18:43:10 ]
RE: Hello!! We are with Justin Elementary in Justin, TX. Can you tell us why wings have to be curved?
Good question...very good question. The curved shape causes air to move faster over the top, than over the flat bottom surface. This results in less pressure on the top than on the bottom. Therefore, the pressure on the bottom is greater and creates lift. This was a very good question..

[ Wilbur - 68 - 18:44:13 ]
RE: Greg Williams/ SmartLab, Cincinnati ONe of our students wanted to know how long it took to build the Wright Flyer?
Greg, the wright flyer took about 3 weeks. Some earlier construction occurred in our bicycle shop.

[ Orville - 69 - 18:44:38 ]
RE: Greg Williams/ SmartLab, Cincinnati ONe of our students wanted to know how long it took to build the Wright Flyer?
We built and tested our gliders and the 1903 Flyer at the rate of about one a year. There was a 1900 kite/glider, a 1901 glider, a 1902 glider, the 1903 flyer, a 1904 flyer, and a 1905 flyer. After that we built at a much faster rate.

[ Orville - 71 - 18:46:02 ]
RE: Angie/4th grade/homeschool/MO When you were flying, did you ever get any funny reactions from people on the ground who had never seen an airplane before?
Angie, actually the people that actually saw us fly were pretty impressed. The funny reactions came from the people we told that we flew, but didn't see it, and didn't beleive us.

[ Wilbur - 72 - 18:46:11 ]
RE: Angie/4th grade/homeschool/MO When you were flying, did you ever get any funny reactions from people on the ground who had never seen an airplane before?
Oh yes! When I demonstrated the airplane to the French in 1908, they didn't believe me! When I flew in front of the thousands of people, they all stood to their feet and cheered! The Americans could actually fly!

[ Wilbur - 73 - 18:48:03 ]
RE: SmartLab, Cincinnati - What did the first designs of your flyer look like? Did a bicycle influence your designs in any way?
The first designs of the aircraft looked a lot like a giant box kite on its side. Our machining skill from the bicycle shop helped us build it.

[ Orville - 74 - 18:48:39 ]
RE: Zachary/5thgrade/CumminsHomeschool/OH How long did it take you to build your first Plane
Zachary, the actual process to build an airplane of that type took only a few weeks, if you knew exactly what you were building. Since we were learning as we built, it took three years.

[ Wilbur - 77 - 18:49:40 ]
RE: If the the hand glider encouraged you how did you think of an whole new thing and blueprint?
There were many gliders we made, but because of control problems, we went through several designs and finally ended up with our wright flyer.

[ Orville - 79 - 18:50:20 ]
RE: If the the hand glider encouraged you how did you think of an whole new thing and blueprint?
We knew that a practical airplane had to be bigger, and couldn't use weight shifting to effect direction changes. Wilbur though of wing warping from twisting with a small cardboard box.

[ Wilbur - 82 - 18:51:43 ]
RE: Roxie/8th/Homeschooler/MO Were you guys scared on your first flight?
Good question Roxie, both of us we excited to fly, it was our fear of crashing...particularly Orville. He was so scared...

[ Orville - 83 - 18:52:02 ]
RE: SmartLab, Cincinnati - What did the first designs of your flyer look like? Did a bicycle influence your designs in any way?
We used materials and the machinery from the bicycle shop, but mostly we worked on how we thought the airplane should work independantly of the bicycle.

[ Wilbur - 84 - 18:53:33 ]
RE: SmartLab, Cincinnati - One of our students wanted to know what powered the engines... come to think of it, what were the engines made from? Was it an automobile engine?
It was not an automobile engine. It was a aluminum block cast and machined by our mechanic Charlie Taylor. it had 4 cylinders, no carberator at all and generated only 12 horsepower...the same as a lawnmower engine!

[ Orville - 86 - 18:54:02 ]
RE: SmartLab, Cincinnati - One of our students wanted to know what powered the engines... come to think of it, what were the engines made from? Was it an automobile engine?
We looked at all sorts of gasoline engines but found none of the suitable or cheap enough. We finally designed our own and had Charlie Taylor build it for us.

[ Wilbur - 87 - 18:54:56 ]
RE: Nicolas/MrSimmons/6th - What part did you play in forming DACA, now NASA?
None at all actually. We were trying to sell to the U.S. government and get a patent only.

[ Orville - 89 - 18:55:49 ]
RE: Nicolas/MrSimmons/6th - What part did you play in forming DACA, now NASA?
Nicolas, I think you mean NACA, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. I actaully served on the initial commission that recommended NACA be created.

[ Wilbur - 91 - 18:56:20 ]
RE: What do you think is the most important event in the history of flight?
The first sucessful flight of a manned, powered, controlled aircraft - namely ours. This had never been done before.

[ Orville - 92 - 18:57:31 ]
RE: What do you think is the most important event in the history of flight?
This is a very tough question. There are so many events that have defined aviation since our first flight.

[ Wilbur - 94 - 18:58:09 ]
RE: SmartLab, Cincinnati - We've been discussing this for the last few days here and one of the prevailing questions is: How did people respond to your attempts to build an airplane. Did people think you were crazy? What about your families? How did they feel about it?
Interesting question. Most people thought we were a little crazy and firmly believed that the flight of something heavier than air was not possible. Even after 1903 there were some people who continued to think it wasn't possible. Our family, particularly our father an my sister were always supportive of us.

[ Wilbur - 95 - 18:59:03 ]
RE: Were you RICH after you flew the airplane?
Relatively so...yes, but not immediately. It took us several years to get a patent and to sell the aircraft to customers.

[ Orville - 96 - 18:59:40 ]
RE: SmartLab, Cincinnati - We've been discussing this for the last few days here and one of the prevailing questions is: How did people respond to your attempts to build an airplane. Did people think you were crazy? What about your families? How did they feel about it?
The family was very supportive. Other people were skeptical, but very few actually called us crackpots or nutty. (At least not to our face). When it came to getting funding, well that's different

[ Orville - 98 - 19:01:05 ]
RE: Were you RICH after you flew the airplane?
I got rich much later, after we sold the airplane, and people saw that it was a good idea.

[ Wilbur - 99 - 19:01:20 ]
RE: SmartLab, Cincinnati - What made you decide on Kitty Hawk as the location of the first flight? It seems a long way from your home in Dayton? Did you build the plane in Dayton and cart it down to the coast?
Kitty Hawk was selected, it was based on continuous wind, soft sand, and very few obstructions. It gave us a lot of room for flying. part of the aircraft was assembled prior to Kitty hawk, but most was assembled there.

[ Orville - 102 - 19:02:19 ]
RE: SmartLab, Cincinnati - What made you decide on Kitty Hawk as the location of the first flight? It seems a long way from your home in Dayton? Did you build the plane in Dayton and cart it down to the coast?
We needed a place with strong steady wind, and this is where the weather services recommended. The soft sand there also cinched it as the place to go.

[ Wilbur - 104 - 19:03:55 ]
RE: Roxie/8th/Homeschooler/MO What do you think of modern airplanes?
Interesting question. I'm fascinated by their power and their ability to climb. There's nothing more unbelievable than the shuttle taking off. I died in 1912, but my brother didn't until 1948, his last flight as a pilot was May 13, 1918. He saw many many powerful aircraft come and go in that time.

[ Orville - 106 - 19:05:30 ]
RE: Wesley5yearsold/MsPerrahsClass/CA How fast can the propellers go?
Wesley, the propellers rotate at about 340 revolutions per minute. That's almost 200 miles per hour at the tip, so you definitely would not want to bump into it at that speed. Those proellers moved us at about 28 miles per hour

[ Wilbur - 107 - 19:05:47 ]
RE: Did you read some books for idea to make the airplane?
Yes. On May 30, 1898, I wrote to the Smithsonian, they sent me all the material they had on Aviation to that time. oddly enough, and unfortunately I died 14 years later to the day in 1912. Strange, but true.

[ Wilbur - 109 - 19:06:22 ]
RE: Zahcary/5thgrade/CumminsHomeschool/OH how long did it take you to buld your first plane
The first glider took about two weeks to build.

[ Wilbur - 110 - 19:06:45 ]
RE: What did your plane motor run on?
It ran on gasoline.

[ Orville - 111 - 19:06:52 ]
RE: Roxie/8th/Homeschooler/MO What do you think of modern airplanes?
Roxie, It amazes me that there are airplanes out there that our bigger than the distance covered in our first flight.

[ Orville - 114 - 19:08:12 ]
RE: What did your plane motor run on?
The engine ran on ordinary gasoline although the quality of the gas wasn't up to the standards of what you use today.

[ Wilbur - 115 - 19:08:24 ]
RE: Roxie/8th/Homeschooler/Mo How many airplanes did you build or design in your lives? How many before they were successful?
Let's see...there were the 1900, 1901 and 1902 glider then the 1903 flyer. After that there were 11 different improvements, including the Wright baby grand.

[ Orville - 117 - 19:10:56 ]
RE: Roxie/8th/Homeschooler/Mo How many airplanes did you build or design in your lives? How many before they were successful?
Roxie, our first sellable aircraft was the 1908 Wright B which we sold to the army. We sold a lot of planes to the military.

[ Wilbur - 118 - 19:11:36 ]
RE: Why does a plane look more like a fish than a bird?
Because of the advancement of designes of aircraft primarily due to Henri Bleriot, a Frenchman was shown to be of superior design. The fuselage was designed in and the kite-like appearance faded.

[ Orville - 119 - 19:12:03 ]
RE: SmartLab, Cincinnati - How high and far was the first flight? After you got started, where was the first place you wanted to fly?
I flew at about 10 - 20 feet above the ground for about 12 seconds and 120 feet on the first flight.

[ Orville - 123 - 19:14:41 ]
RE: David5yearsold/MsPerrahsClass/CA How did you make your plane fly up and down?
David, by shanging the amount of power from the engine, and moving the controls to redirect the airflow, we can make the airplane go up and down, left or right, and roll. This allows you to get it where you want to go.

[ Orville - 126 - 19:16:42 ]
RE: Ariel5yearsold/MsPerrahsClass/CA Did you use an "ice box" to keep your food cold?
Ariel, yes we had the ice delivery man fill every couple of days. I can't remember, but I suspect I bought one of the new mechanical refigerators when they appeared in the 1920 - 1930 time frame.

[ Wilbur - 127 - 19:16:56 ]
RE: SmartLab, Cincinnati - How high and far was the first flight? After you got started, where was the first place you wanted to fly?
The first flight, on Dec. 17th, 1903 was 120 feet in total distance at an altitude of 8 - 10 feet for 12 seconds. . The second was 175 feet, third 200 ft. the 4th 852 feet, with me at the controls. The last three were only 12 - 14 feet off the ground. We were planning the 5th flight to fly over the coast guard station , but the wind caught it and it crashed and spun end over end over the sand dunes.

[ Wilbur - 128 - 19:17:34 ]
RE: How did you get your gas?
We brought it down with us on the train and the boat.

[ Orville - 129 - 19:17:43 ]
RE: How did you make your engin
Charlie Taylor built our engines with the machine tools in the bicycle shop.

[ Wilbur - 131 - 19:18:51 ]
RE: Ariel5yearsold/MsPerrahsClass/CA Did you use an "ice box" to keep your food cold?
No. The only food that might have needed refridgeration were the eggs we made, but we bought those from the residents of Kitty hawk. I made biscuts from water and powder, but no milk.

[ Orville - 133 - 19:19:31 ]
RE: Brianna Lissman 5th OR What was your favorite sport when you were in school?
Brianna, we played some sports in school. We even played hockey.

[ Wilbur - 134 - 19:19:50 ]
RE: Brianna Lissman 5th OR What was your favorite sport when you were in school?
I liked bicycle riding. We entered contests to see who would be the fastest. There were many such contests at that time. We also played street hockey.

[ Wilbur - 135 - 19:20:50 ]
RE: Roxie/homeschool 8th grade /MO How long did you guys work on your first airplane before it would fly?
We worked from 1900 - 1903 before we had a good aircraft. Before that we made hundreds of glider flights.

[ Orville - 136 - 19:21:15 ]
RE: Kortnie Shipley - 5th grade OR. Why did you guys go to your mom for mechanical expertise and not your father wasn't he an expert when it came to mechanical questions and information?
Kortnie - Our father was a bishop in the church. He was not as mechanically inclined as our mother was.

[ Wilbur - 139 - 19:22:48 ]
RE: Kortnie Shipley - 5th grade OR. Why did you guys go to your mom for mechanical expertise and not your father wasn't he an expert when it came to mechanical questions and information?
Excellent question! Our mother was our woodworking and tools teacher. She came from a long line of horse coach builders and she passed them along to us. Our father was a bishop, and not schooled in those areas. Again, excellent question.!!

[ Wilbur - 141 - 19:24:44 ]
RE: Kiley 4th OR How many things did both of you invent?
Interesting question...our main invention was the aircraft, however, my brother Orville had several other inventions including an aircraft stabilizer and a really nice table-top toy featuring a clown that swung from trapeze to trapeze.

[ Orville - 142 - 19:25:24 ]
RE: Kiley 4th OR How many things did both of you invent?
Kiley our inventions really center around building airplanes. We didn't invent as many totally different revolutionary things like Edison did, but we made a lot of evolutionary tools that improved the airplane.

[ Wilbur - 146 - 19:26:23 ]
RE: Yasmeen Gamboa 5th OR Wilbur how many kids did you have?
None. I never married, but I did have a number of nephews and nieces through my brothers Reuchlin and Lorin.

[ Orville - 147 - 19:26:54 ]
RE: Yasmeen Gamboa 5th OR Wilbur how many kids did you have?
Yasmeen, neither of us married and had children, but we did have a lot of nieces and nephews.

[ Orville - 148 - 19:27:50 ]
RE: Cynthia 5th OR. What did you feel when you were flying in the airplane, what did you imagine that you were doing?
Actually Cynthia, that plane was so hard to fly, I had to concentrate pretty hard on just flying.

[ Wilbur - 149 - 19:28:13 ]
RE: Cynthia 5th OR. What did you feel when you were flying in the airplane, what did you imagine that you were doing?
We had very little time to be scared or excited because our aircraft were always unstable to some degree until about 1905 and required absolutely constant attention to the controls.

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 150 - 19:28:17 ]
What great questions!! We are coming to the end of our chat for today. I'm going to slow down on putting questions into the room so that we get answers for the ones posted. Wilbur & Orville have promised to chat with us again during this Centennial year. This chat will finish in about 5 minutes.

[ Orville - 151 - 19:29:05 ]
RE: Brianna Lissman 5th OR Wilbur how many brothers and sisters did you have?
Brianna, we had two other brothers, Lauren and Reichlin, and our sister Katharine

[ Wilbur - 152 - 19:29:43 ]
RE: Yasmeen Gamboa 5th OR How long were you in school?
Good question. We both finished high school, but never received a diploma because we didn't attend the graduation ceremony because we thought the ceremony was unnecessary. Only our sister Katharine went on to college and became a teacher.

[ Orville - 153 - 19:30:11 ]
RE: Yasmeen Gamboa 5th OR How long were you in school?
Yasmeen, although I didn't finish high school, I studied all my life.

[ Orville - 154 - 19:31:36 ]
RE: Kortnie Shipley - 5th grade OR Wilbur, What was your favorite subject in school and did you like school?
Kortnie, we enjoyed math and science, but also enjoyed literature and the arts too.

[ Wilbur - 157 - 19:33:50 ]
RE: Kortnie Shipley - 5th grade OR Wilbur, What was your favorite subject in school and did you like school?
Good question Kortnie. Yes I liked school and spent a good deal of time studying. My favorite subjects were math and science. Because of an injury playing street hockey, (the puck hit me in the mouth and knocked out a couple of teeth) I decided to retreat to the home and care for my mother who was dying at the time).

[ Orville - 155 - 19:33:11 ]

I think I've answered all the questions I can answer today. It was good chatting with all of you, and Wilbur my dear brother, until next time...

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 156 - 19:33:23 ]
I want to thank Wilbur & Orville for spending their time with us today. I noticed several of the schools that logged in are preparing for the Space Day challenges. Be sure to join us next week for the expert help on these challenges. See the Calendar at http://quest.nasa.gov/calendar for details.

[ Linda/NASAQuest - 158 - 19:34:14 ]
This has been a very informative chat. Thank you all for your contribution.
