High School Teacher

Ottawa, Ontario

Originally from Hamilton, I have been teaching for 10 years and am presently head of the science department at Sacred Heart High School in Ottawa.  I graduated from Laurentian University in 1996 with a BSc and a focus in Geology.  I then graduated with a BEd from Brock University in 1997.  Since then, I have been actively involved in developing both curricula and activities in Earth and Space sciences.  An amateur astronomer, I have studied astronomy at Carleton University and organized night sky viewing evenings for high school students.  As a teacher of the Grade 12 Earth and Space Science program, I have also lead several class trips to areas of geologic interest in and around Ottawa.

This summer, I will be participating in the Educators Project in the North and will travel with members of the field party to Axel Heiberg Island, Nunavut.  I will be helping with field analysis and will then work to develop classroom activities for students studying space and geology. I am especially looking forward to creating themes to link the various elements of high school science using the data, techniques and experiences gathered this summer in the Arctic.

When I’m not instilling in students a curiosity of the workings of the world, and universe, around them, I coach basketball, am an avid photographer and have a passion for camping.  I have been coaching high school basketball for the past 8 years and before that I lead camping groups through Ontario’s various parks.  I spend most of my time outside the classroom with my wife Julie and two children, Jacen and Robyn.  We enjoy camping through the summers and skiing in the winter.
