I am currently the Associate Director for Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center in Reno, NV. It is literally my dream job. As both the area’s largest public science education institution and as an outreach of the University of Nevada, Reno, the Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center serves over 45,000 people per year, 13,000 of which are K-12 students; I get to share my enthusiasm about astronomy and space technology/exploration to every student that comes in, which is an incredibly rewarding task. During summer, I teach model-rocketry classes for ages 8-14, which is a blast (no pun intended). I have had a lifelong fascination with the space program and astronomy, and have worked at Fleischmann Planetarium since I was 15 years old, with a short stint in between at OMSI in Portland, OR. My early college career was headed toward engineering, with a schedule full of physics, chemistry, and advanced math; during my Junior year I shifted gears to Digital Media art, and now have a BFA in such. My other job, incidentally, is teaching Art & Technology courses regularly at the university. I feel that the disciplines of Art and Science have massive overlap, and I’m interested in exploring that common ground. My most recent art project consisted of constructing a series of increasingly accurate non-funtional replicas of Mercury-era spacesuits. I look forward immensely to the possibility of participating in Spaceward Bound, and working with a likewise enthusiastic team of researchers and educators.
