Hello! My name is Curtis Coney, and I am a teacher at Huffaker Elementary School in Reno, Nevada. I have been teaching in the Washoe Country School District since 1999. I am teaching sixth grade in all subjects to include Earth Science for eight of the last ten years. I taught at Billinghurst Middle School teaching Life Science and Physical Science for two of those years. I believe teaching the students in the sixth through eighth grade is challenging and rewarding.
I attended the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, and graduated in 1996. I have a B.S. in Secondary Education with a major in Earth Science. I am retired military with twenty-two years service. As a second career education has been rewarding, and I would recommend it for anyone going into a second career.
I have attended several field workshops in Nevada and find that going into the field is the best way to learn. Two of the workshops were Nevada Educators Really Doing Science (N.E.R.D.S) and the Climate and Global Change Geoscience Education Workshop (NCAR/UCAR) in Boulder, Colorado. Staying current in science, continuing to learn, and sharing with other professionals are the goal I have given myself for the rest of my teaching career.
One of my goals is to receive a Masters in Science in Geoscience and continually improve and learn to share that love of learning with my students. There is not a day that is not challenging, and there is always something that makes each day worth it. Spending time with the Spaceward Bound team will be the most rewarding experience in my teaching career.
