Lesson Plan

Before the Web events

  • If you have never participated in a chat or forum, review What is a Chat? What is a Forum?
  • If you’ve never participated in a webcast, review What is a Webcast? And download RealPlayer
  • Explain to students that Thursday, April 26, 2001 is Take Our Daughter’s To Work Day which is a day for students to learn about what adults do at their jobs. This year’s them is Technology Innovations. Since not all students can go to work with their parents, students can visit NASA virtually!
  • Tell students that they will learn about people and careers at NASA and the new technologies they are developing to help people AND that they’ll actually get to ask them questions!
  • Tell students that their goal will be to identify one or more technologies developed at NASA and explain how it has or can help people. They will also need to research at least one NASA career. Explain that they will create a trading card about one NASA career they learn about and a trading card about one NASA technology and how it helps people. (Hand-out trading card templates)
  • Explain that before they can participate in the online events, they need to review the bio or bios of the person or people they will be talking to so that they can ask good questions and so that they don’t ask them any questions that they’ve already answered. (NASA people are very busy).
  • Have students review the bio(s) and with a partner, come up with 3 good questions that they could ask about the technology they are developing and they’re career. (You may want to use the Chat Question Generator to assist in this process)
  • Discuss with group who the person is and what they do. List questions on overhead/ whiteboard. Prioritize the top 5-10 questions.

During the Web events

  • Have students post their questions in the chats, webcasts and forum. (See the NASA Occupations Chat Lesson which includes suggestions on how to use Quest technologies for different computer logistics.)
  • Students may also want to Technology Resource links on NASA Spinoff Technologies. These are technologies developed by NASA that have had practical applications in society aside from their usefulness for aerospace and space research.

After the Web events

  • Have students enter the information they found in the trading card templates. Have them draw the technology or career they chose or download and print a picture from the Web.
  • Have students share and trade their cards. Have students explain what problem their chosen technology helps to solve. Have them explain why they chose the career they chose and what interests them about the career. Categorize technologies and careers as a class.
  • You may want to use the Debrief to help students debrief on what they learned from their experience on NASA Quest.
