Hello and welcome to today's Black History Month chat with Janice Everett
from NASA Kenndy Space Center. Janice works for the Biomedical Office
under the Environmental Program Office in the Remediation Group. She is
responsible for the hazardous and non-hazardous waste for NASA. Her job
is to make sure that NASA stays in compliance with the Occupational Safety
and Health Administration (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
[ Oran/NASAChatHost - 7 - 13:00:00

And now, here is Janice Everett to answer your questions.
[ JaniceEverett/KSC - 10 - 13:04:34
]
RE: [YouthAlive] What is the purpose
of your job?
The purpose of my job is to make sure that all hazardous and non-hazardous
waste is handled and dispose of properly. Which is according to the rules,
regulations, policies, and procedures of the Florida Department of Environmental
Protection Agency.
[ JaniceEverett/KSC - 12 - 13:06:09
]
RE: [YouthAlive] Where do the hazardous
wastes you work with come from?
The hazardous wastes that I deal with comes from soils and liquids that
is deep in the grounds here at Kennedy Space Center.
[ JaniceEverett/KSC - 14 - 13:08:35
]
RE: [YouthAlive] Do you deal with animals?
If so, what kind?
I come in contact with a variety of animals here at Kennedy Space Center
while doing my job. Such animals consist of the following: Wild Hogs,
Snakes, Racoons, Gators, and a hugh variety of insects.
[ JaniceEverett/KSC - 15 - 13:09:31
]
RE: [YouthAlive] Do you deal with the
shuttle waste systems?
No, we have contractors here at Kennedy Space Center that takes care of
the Shuttle's waste.
[ JaniceEverett/KSC - 19 - 13:15:24
]
RE: [YouthAlive] What technology systems
do you deal with?
The technology system that I use is a geographical system that is use
for a site layout. It is a tool to display a facility layout which helps
me and my co-workers identify the areas where wells should be installed
and where sampling should take place on a environmental site.
[ JaniceEverett/KSC - 22 - 13:16:59
]
RE: [YouthAlive] What happens to the
wastes in a space shuttles?
I believe that the contractor has a group of people that goes to the space
shuttle after it has landed and evaluate everything (meaning the waste)
and decide how it should be handled.
[ JaniceEverett/KSC - 23 - 13:18:49
]
RE: [LindsayMonk] Is it dangerous to
work with the materials?
It is very dangerous when working around any type of hazardous materials.
However, I am given proper training in how I should handle the hazardous
materials and what to do should an incident/accident occur.
[ JaniceEverett/KSC - 26 - 13:21:19
]
RE: [YouthAlive] Does launching space
shuttles affect the enviroment? If so, in what ways?
Launching the Space Shuttle only effect the animals in the environment.
I believe that the loud noise of the Space Shuttle during lift-off sometimes
frighten them.
[ JaniceEverett/KSC - 27 - 13:23:38
]
RE: [YouthAlive] What do you do with
the animals that are sick due to hazardous materials?
All the animals that we find that are sick, we contact the Fish & Wildlife
Agency. They have people that work for them that specializes in taking
care of the animals. We also make sure that, that particular environmental
site is cleaned properly so that the animals will have a safe place to
roam.
[ JaniceEverett/KSC - 30 - 13:25:32
]
RE: [LindsayMonk] What did you major
in during college that helped you get your qualifications for your job?
Most of my experience comes from the variety of training courses that
Kennedy Space Center provides. However, in college, courses like biology,
chemistry, and environmental will help you get started.
[ JaniceEverett/KSC - 31 - 13:28:30
]
RE: [YouthAlive] What materials do you
deal with?
The materials that I deal with is mostly alcohol and petroleum. These
materials are mixed deep into the earth. We have a crew that comes here
to Kennedy Space Center with a drill rig and dig it up and place it inside
55 gallon drums. Then sampling takes place and we wait for the lab analysis.
The lab analysis tells us if it is hazardous or non-hazardous.
[ JaniceEverett/KSC - 32 - 13:29:01
]
RE: [YouthAlive] Is rocket fuel the
most explosive material? If so, why?

[ JaniceEverett/KSC - 41 - 13:37:32
]
RE: [YouthAlive] How do you prepare
for a job in your line of work?
First of all, you must love your enviroment. Second, get a college degree
in either, Environmental, Biology, or Geography. Third, tell yourself
that you want to make a difference and set your goals. Fourth, purpose
in your heart everyday to achieve your goals and you will then make a
difference in the wonderful world of Environmental.

in a proper fashion.
[ JaniceEverett/KSC - 48 - 13:43:12
]
RE: [Michael/TheBarnesvilleSchool] How
did the hazardous materials get into the soil?
We believe that the hazardous materials we dumped back on the ground during
a time in this country when no one knew or understood what keeping the
environmental clean meant. After years of not knowing and coming into

You need to have a high school and college education. Also, a love for
keeping the environment clean and safe. You must be willing to take a
variety of training courses that will keep you up-to-date about the changes

[ JaniceEverett/KSC - 56 - 13:48:23
]
RE: [Michael/TheBarnesvilleSchool] Do
you actually do the soil testing?
No, I do not test the soil. However, I have seen it done and it is an
