Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 3:11PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Hello, Is anone here for a S/MORe webchat

Duncan (SMORE): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 3:13PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Yes, I'm here

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 3:15PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Hi Duncan, It looks like we are the only ones for now. I'm going
to be just standby for visitors, but really do my travel paperwork
for the CSTA conference!

Duncan (SMORE): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 3:18PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
That's what's good about Mac's, running lots of stuff
simultaneously, I don't have much memory, but use 16 M virtual.
I'll be back to cover the very end of the session

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 3:20PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
If anybody is around, please chime in

Don (Homeschool): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 3:26PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Hi Marc, since there isn't much traffic here I figured I would come
in. Just what is S/MORe?

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 3:28PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Hi Don, SMORE is an interactive project that is about the people
who do space life sciences onboard the Mir spacestation

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 3:30PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
The URL for S/MORe is http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/smore To
receive regular information, you should sign up for the mailling
list. TO do that, send an email message to
listmanager@quest.arc.nasa.gov; in the message body, write these
words: subscribe updates-sm

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 3:30PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
You should also check out our other project called Women of
NASA. a list of all of our projects is available at
http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/interactive

Don (Homeschool): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 3:32PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
OK. I heard it mentioned for the first time during the LFM chat
and was curious to know more about it. What websites would you
point me to for more information.

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 3:32PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
I need to run away for 10 minutes. I will be back shortly. Sorry. I
would be interested to learn about you. How many kids do you
homeschool, what are their ages, do you have help or do you do it
on your own, etc

Don (Homeschool): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 3:32PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Forget that. You already answered it. Thanks.

Don (Homeschool): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 3:35PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
I can stick around for a while. Let me know when you get back.
We h/s two (7 and 8). On our own, but in a support group. Both
my wife and I teach.

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 3:53PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Hi Don, I am back. Sorry to rudely go away for a bit, but I am
leaving tonight for a one day trip to the California Science
Teachers Association conference and I needed to do some gov't
paperwork. If we don't do it ahead of time, we really get in
trouble. All week I wanted to do it, but it has been crazy!

Duncan (SMORE): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 3:54PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Hi Don - how do you typically use computers in your
homeschooling?

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 3:54PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
What led you and your wife to decide to homeschool? Also,
whereabouts do you live?

Don (Homeschool): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 3:58PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
I like to use the internet and the search engines as a way of
exploring whatever interests them. My son like bikes, so we
search on bikes. My daughter wants to be a zoo-keeper, so
searching we go. I have involved them with the weather project
last year and LFM and STS-79 this year. For geography, we
search for whatever we can about a particular country. Currently it
is South American countries.

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:00PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Don, Is there any gov't mandated requirements about what you
have to cover in order to be certified. Or is there even such a thing
as certification

Don (Homeschool): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:01PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
We live north of Dallas. We were led to h/s'ing for many reasons.
To name just a few: religious, my wife is already home, I like to
teach. Also I think that it is not good for students to be moved
along as an age-group.

Don (Homeschool): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:03PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Limited restrictions. Only have to teach basics (3-R's) and
community. Texas is very good with regards to h/s'ing. No
certificate is required.

Don (Homeschool): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:07PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
We teach quite a few things. Grammar, Penmanship, Math,
Science, Geography, Gymnastics, Spelling, Art and a few other
subjects that are slipping my mind.

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:07PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
So how long have you been at at with your kids? Since the
beginning?

Don (Homeschool): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:07PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Do either of you h/s?

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:08PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
And do your children get together with other children in the
support group?

Don (Homeschool): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:09PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
We had our son in pre-school 4 years ago. We have been teaching
ever since. And loving it, although being both parent and teacher
has its downsides. Primarily in terms of keeping them focused.

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:10PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
I definately see a good side to home schooling. In two months,
my wife and I are having our first child. I don't think we'll
homeschool but I think we'll make up for public school
deficiencies with lots of home teaching.

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:12PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
One real issue for me would be with the level of effort it would
take. It is a lot to prepare good lessons, and deliver them. Since
both my wife and I work, I can't imagine how we'd ever manage.
I suppose for it to really work, at least one parent must be home
during the day. Is that true of the families you know who home
school?

Don (Homeschool): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:13PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
We belong to a support group with 59 other families amounting to
over 100 other children which is ONE area of their "socialization".

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:15PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
So how often do these 100 children get together? Is it a regular
thing?

Don (Homeschool): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:17PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
I know that if we didn't h/s, I would still teach in the evening. I
have found I love the time with them. I do know some families
where both parents work but still teach in the evening.

Don (Homeschool): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:20PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
As an entire group, never. As large (20-30), weekly for field-trips
and co-op classes. The co-op is where parents can teach a subject
where they have a special interest. Then every 3 months we have a
"Scholars Night" where the kid will bring whatever they have
been working on and also some will sing or play an instrument.
The dance group will perform. Things like that.

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:21PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Don, I am needing to sign off soon. But I would be interested in
learning how often the group of 100 (or subgroups) get together,
and if it is regular

Don (Homeschool): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:22PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
I can tell I am running out of time here. My sentences are getting
more and more cryptic. I am still at work and should probably
think about getting home. After all I have to start teaching in 40
minutes.

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:22PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
That sounds very good. WE see more and more h/s ers on these
NASA projects and it simply delights me and my managers. I will
catch up with you later. Thansk so much for helping educate me
about home schooling

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:22PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Good bye

Don (Homeschool): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:23PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Sure. My email address is lifetime@airmail.net. Write me a note. I
would love to write more about the subject.

Don (Homeschool): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:23PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Bye.

Duncan (SMORE): . . . . Thu, Oct 3, 4:24PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Sorry, got called away, but interesting to read the homeschool
discussion. Got to go myself.
