S/MORE Project News
Updates
January 10, l996 Today our last addition to Updates was mailed, but S/MORE activities continue: * You can still receive answers to questions to the end of January. * We look forward to classrooms submitting their plant-growing data to be shared online. * We hope for some lively discussion of the data received from Phase 2 of the Great Plant Debate. * We'd still like to see pictures of students participating in the project posting on the S/MORE website. For details on how to send these, see http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/smore/events/posting.html ********************************************************************* December 20, l996 Part 2 of the Great Plant Debate where students grow plants and share data about these plants will continue after the holidays. If you plan to participate, please send a brief RSVP to Marc at marc@quest.arc.nasa.gov. If we don't get enough interest, we'll consider canceling this activity. ********************************************************************* December 17, 1996 December 18, is our final WebChat Archive with NASA experts, featuring Cecilia Wigley. Join us. All WebChats are archived on the web for reference at: http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/smore/events/webchats/experts.html ********************************************************************* December 6, l996 You will note from the newest Newsletter (Update #10) that discussion of design in Phase 1 of the Great Plant Debate is being extended to the beginning of the holiday break (December 20). This will consequently also extend the deadline for Phase 2, allowing time for classrooms to complete the germination project after the break and gather results to share. Discussion in Phase 2 will begin in the latter part of January. Let us know at: marc@quest.arc.nasa.gov if you want to participate in Phase 2. ********************************************************************* November 25, l996 It's time to consider "growing that wheat." Phase 2 of the Great Plant Debate: a wheat germination project designed to bring to the classroom an experience parallel to that of space scientists are aboard the Russian spacecraft Mir and the U.S. Space Shuttle. A lesson plan for this activity can be found at: http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/smore/teachers/act1.html ********************************************************************* November 18, l996 Mark your calendar: On Wednesday, November 20 from 10-11 AM Pacific (1-2 PM Eastern) Tana Hoban-Higgins (Principal Investigator at the University of California, Davis) will join us in a webchat. She is involved in designing experiments to study the internal body clocks of beetles in space. Plan to join us. ********************************************************************* November 15, l996 Students have begun to discuss the relative merits of various hardware designs for growing plants in space while experts look over their shoulders. A hint from expert Gerard Heyenga: Would your design work upside down? Please consider having you students joint this debate at: http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/smore/debate-sm-lwgate.html ********************************************************************* November 12, l996 Don't forget to join us in the S/MORE chatroom tomorrow from 10-11AM Pacific (1-2PM Eastern) as John James (NASA's Chief Toxicologist responsible for studying chemicals that could harm people in spaceflight) makes his time available to answer your questions! To prepare, see his bio at: http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/smore/team/jjames.html and then joint us at: http://k12-dev.arc.nasa.gov/smore/events/interact.html ********************************************************************* November 10, 1996 Designs are coming in. Take a look at them at: http://k12-dev.arc.nasa.gov/smore/events/designs/index.html. It is now time to begin the debate (students discussing the pros and cons of different designs submitted). Join us at: http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/smore/debate-sm-lwgate.html ********************************************************************* November 1, l996 As the design phase of the Great Plant Debate comes to a close, we look forward to your sumissions at http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/smore/events/posting.html ********************************************************************* October 24, l996 Please help us by participating in the voluntary short registration process at http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/smore/credits/survey.html This will help us to know who we serve and how well. Thanks! ********************************************************************* October 21, l996 The deadlines for the Great Plant Debate have been extended due to popular demand. See http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/smore/events/datashare.html to see the updated deadlines. ********************************************************************* October 10, 1996 S/MORE updates #4 reminds us all that a big part of the "connection" encouraged through this project is the connection between teachers. Join us at http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/smore/events/interact.html to join these online conversations. Also featured in Updates #4 (see Updates archive below) is a new feature: What's up in space? We plan this to become a regular feature to report on the latest activities onboard the Mir space station. The original source is NASA's Shuttle-Mir pages. ********************************************************************* October 7, l996 In many places, this coming Saturday (October 12) is a time for volunteers to materialize at schools around the United States and install network cabling. This wonderful ritual is called NetDay. In support of the activity, NASA is organizing a full day of content to go with all of the connectivity. To find out more information about the planned activities, check out: http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/netday96 ********************************************************************* September 27, l996 We'd like to encourage you to gear up for The Great Plant Debate. It is a collaborative activity in which classrooms around the world design plant-growing hardware, debate the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches, and then compare with NASA designs. Details about the project may be found at: http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/smore/events ********************************************************************* September 10, l996 Our new Project Update outlines S/MORE project opportunities and includes journals that give insights into what it is like working with Russians and growing plants in space. If you are not yet receiving these, you can read it in the archives linked below. ********************************************************************* August 23, l996 Our first project update welcoming you to the project, sharing a snippit from Teri Schnepp about her trip to Russia and a project journal from Jim Higgins giving us some of his concerns in designing the beetle activity monitor. Below you will see a link taking you to the Updates archive for this project. ********************************************************************* August 16, l996 Our roster of team members with biographies online is growing (contains 18 now). Take and look and get better acquainted with these key participants in the project. Also, the Cultural portion of this project is taking shape. We still value your inputs and would appreciate responses to the "Want Ad" above. ********************************************************************* July 22, l996 The web pages for this project continue in development, however, please note the "Wanted" message above. Participation at this point will be very helpful in determining the direction of the project. Also, there are terrific pictures available in the photo gallery! Take a look. ********************************************************************* July 17, l996 Information on Microgravity is now available in the Background area, as are some usable classroom activities on the same subject from SpaceLink have been placed in the Teachers' Resource Center for help in planning lessons. ********************************************************************* June 19, l996 This is the place to look for the latest progress in development of this web site
