Space Team Online Web Chat

Date: February 11, 1998

Featuring: Dr. George Martin
Medical Officer/Flight Surgeon
NASA Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, FL

[ Oran/NASAChatHost - 13 - 09:58:09 ]
Hello everyone! Welcome to today's Web chat with Dr. George Martin from NASA Kennedy Space Center! George works at NASA Kennedy Space Center where he supports a number of different programs. His primary job is to maintain the health of the astronauts and the workers who support the astronauts. He also works to ensure that all employees at KSC, and all visitors who come to tour the space center or watch a launch, enter into a safe healthy environment. His office is additionally responsible for making sure that none of the work done at KSC damages the animals, plants and the rest of the natural environment.

[ Oran/NASAChatHost - 15 - 09:58:39 ]
And now here is George Martin to answer your questions.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 14 - 09:58:22 ]
RE: [LisbethEric-students/MontgomeryHigh] What does NASA stand for?
National Aeronautics and Space Administration it was founded back in 1958 to lead our nation's civilian space efforts.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 21 - 10:02:43 ]
RE: [LisbethEricRobbie-students/MontgomeryHigh] What medical problems are frequent in NASA?
Well NASA is a very large organization with many Centers spread around the country. The people that work there probably have the same types of medical problems of everyone else. Now if you mean the astronauts...well they don't have many medical problems. We pick people who are very, very healthy. When they go into space many of them get a little bit of space motion sickness, but that lasts for only a day or so and we have good treatments for it now. Besides that they really don't get to sick.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 23 - 10:04:08 ]
RE: [MrsWatkinson-Watkinson/SMGMTA] Do you ever dream about going into space with the other astronauts?
Well I think a lot about it, and hope to go into space one day myself... but I can't say they I ever dream about it. :)

[ Linda-Linda/J.T.FosterSchool - 28 - 10:07:02 ]
Hi, we are logged on from Nanton, Alberta

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 30 - 10:08:41 ]
RE: [Aztecs-students/MontgomeryHigh] What types of programs do you work on?
I work mostly with medical operations supporting the Space Shuttle. That includes the Emergency Medical Services System that we have in place here at Kennedy Space Center, and at many other locations in the country. I also am involved with making sure that our workers here at KSC aren't exposed to any toxic or hazardous substances. I also work closely with the military units that help support Space Shuttle launches. We also have a lot of people in my office working to make sure that we don't harm the beautiful environment we enjoy so much out here in Florida.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 34 - 10:10:57 ]
RE: [MrsWatkinson-Watkinson/SMGMTA] What does it feel like to have a lot of technology around you? We are an elementary School in Technology, and we are learning something new everyday.
It is very interesting to work in the midst of so much amazing technology. What is more amazing though is all the efforts that are in place out here to make sure that all of this technology does little or no harm to the natural environment which also shares the lands that make up Kennedy Space Center.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 41 - 10:13:47 ]
RE: [Aztecs-students/MontgomeryHigh] How many years of college did you go through ,and were they hard?
I went through 4 years of Undergraduate (first college degree); then 2 years to get my Master's degree; then 4 years of medical school; then 3 years of medical training in Emergency Medicine. I know it sounds like a lot but it goes by quick and is very interesting. I am actually considering going back to get my Ph.D.! :0

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 43 - 10:16:48 ]
RE: [Jacqueline-James/WestPointSchools] Is it hard to get used to weightlessness in space; then when you come back to Earth, getting used to "solid" ground?
Very good question! It takes a little getting used to. At least that is what most of the first time astronauts say when they get back. After a few hours they are much better oriented, and after a few days they don't have many problems at all. When they come back to Earth, they have a bit or re-orientation to do. It depends on how long they have been up. If they have been up for more than a few weeks, it takes longer for them to get used to the 1 gravity environment back here on Earth.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 48 - 10:22:35 ]
RE: [Aztecs-students/MontgomeryHigh] What kinds of test's and experiments are performed on the astronauts?
Now most of the time on Space Shuttle missions we only do routine blood tests, and physical examinations just to make sure they don't have any major problems (which they never have). However, on some missions, like the next scheduled mission which is called Neurolab, we do a lot of different tests on many different body organs to see how space effects them. On this mission we will be doing test on the lungs, the brain, coordination tests, and a lot involving the inner ears and the eyes, and how they communicate to each other and to the brain. We in the medical community are anxiously awaiting this mission

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 53 - 10:25:36 ]
RE: [MrsWatkinson-Watkinson/SMGMTA] If you got the chance to go to the moon, would you go and what do you think is the coolest thing about space?
If I could go to the moon, I would go TOMORROW!!! The coolest thing about space is that there is so much of it that we haven't yet begun to explore. There are lots of things out there waiting for us to learn about them. There is endless potential and we have only scratched the very thinnest surface of it.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 55 - 10:29:55 ]
RE: [Kelley/InglenookElementary-Kelley/InglenookElementary] Does the large amounts of water clouds that come from the shuttle launch have an effect on the Florida environmental or weather patterns in the area?
The steam produced from the clouds of water don't really have any effect on the local environment. However, the fumes produced from the burning fuel from the various Space Shuttle rockets does do a very small and limited amount of damage to the local plants which are very close to the launch pad. Yet, they all return and start growing again just a few days after a launch! It is amazing to see. We closely monitor the effects of the fallout after every single launch. We won't launch if the Weather Forecasters predict that our clouds could go anywhere over a populated area.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 56 - 10:31:59 ]
RE: [jeff-Aron/Homeschool] What medicines do they bring along into space?
We take along many of the same medicines that most of us use down on Earth. Tylenol, Motrin, aspirin, medications for nausea, for back pain, to control motion sickness, and many different antibiotics

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 58 - 10:34:17 ]
RE: [Aztecs-students/MontgomeryHigh] What does it require to have the job you have now?
My job requires education and experience in Aerospace Medicine or a related field. Also experience in Occupational Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Environmental Health and Industrial Hygiene are a big plus. For the most part it requires a number of years of school after your first college degree.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 64 - 10:38:59 ]
RE: [Aztecs-students/MontgomeryHigh] Why does scuba diving interest you?
I just love being under the water and being able to breathe! seems like you are cheating. :) I also love the abundance of underwater life. I also like exploring wrecks and underwater caves, as long as they are safe. There is a lot to do underwater!

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 65 - 10:40:55 ]
RE: [jeff-Aron/Homeschool] Does the food ever make the astronauts sick
We have never had any complaints of spoiled or infected food. In the old days it was pretty bad I have heard, but now it is very tasty.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 69 - 10:44:33 ]
RE: [Aztecs-students/MontgomeryHigh] What do you think about black history month?
I really think that African-American history month is great!!! It is a chance to educate everyone about contributions of African-Americans from the past. Much of this education is STILL left out of the mainstream academic textbooks. it is also a chance to celebrate African-American contributions to American culture

[ Oran/NASAChatHost - 71 - 10:46:48 ]
RE: [Draco/BigDipperGroups-KarenJ.Massey] We are in second grade and have to go back to class. If you have time later, please answer our group question " Is there a place for astronauts if they get sick in space?" We will read all the answers later in the archives. Thank you for your time and answers. Bye from Texas!:)
Draco, thanks for joining us today. We hope to hear from you during our next scheduled Space Team Online chat!

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 72 - 10:46:59 ]
RE: [MrsWatkinson-Watkinson/SMGMTA] You say that you have lived in a number of places. Could you please name four?
Munich, Germany; Columbus, Ohio; Baltimore, Maryland, Melbourne, Florida; Warrensburg, Missouri (close to Kansas City); Belleville, Illinois (Outside of St. Louis); and Vandenburg AFB in California, just to name a few!!!

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 74 - 10:49:23 ]
RE: [scott-Linda/J.T.FosterSchool] what does your uniform look like e.g.: what color
I have many different uniforms! My main Air Force uniform consists of a light blue shirt with dark blue pants. Then there is a dark blue coat that goes over that for more formal meetings. Then there is my "drab" or olive green Flight suit that I wear when I am flying with the Air Force. Then there is my royal blue flight suit that I wear as a NASA Flight Surgeon.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 75 - 10:50:31 ]
RE: [James-James/WestPointSchools] What percentage of astronauts come from the military?
I would say right now about 55% of the astronaut office is in the military maybe as high as 65%.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 78 - 10:51:54 ]
RE: [Magoo-Linda/J.T.FosterSchool] Is this what you wanted to do as a kid.
Ever since I can remember, I have wanted to be an Astronaut. I still am trying to get selected and have been a finalist twice. It is very hard to get picked, but I will continue to try.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 83 - 10:55:05 ]
RE: [Draco/BigDipperGroups-KarenJ.Massey] We are in second grade and have to go back to class. If you have time later, please answer our group question " Is there a place for astronauts if they get sick in space?" We will read all the answers later in the archives. Thank you for your time and answers. Bye from Texas!:)
We try to treat astronauts who get sick in space, while they are still there in space. That is why we have a lot of medical equipment and medications on board the Space Shuttle. If they can't be treated well enough, the Space Shuttle can come back down to Earth, and we can get the astronaut(s) whatever care they need.

[ Oran/NASAChatHost - 85 - 10:56:34 ]
RE: [AJ-Linda/J.T.FosterSchool] Thanks and good-bye from Nanton.
Thank you for joining us today, J.T. Foster School. We hope you can join us again!

[ Oran/NASAChatHost - 87 - 10:58:39 ]
As a reminder, George has agreed to stay with us until 2:30 p.m. Eastern time for today's chat. We hope you can stay with us!

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 89 - 10:59:37 ]
RE: [Kelley-Kelley/InglenookElementary] What would you advise children to do to prepare to be doctors or astronauts in the space program today? How important were your parents and teachers in guiding you to be who you are today?
My mother was the driving force for my career development. She made sure that I studied hard and did well in school. If you study hard and do well in school (elementary through high school), then you can go to whatever college you want (by earning a scholarship) and study what you want. If you want to be an astronaut or a doctor... You have to study hard in Math and Science. These are the most important classes for being an astronaut!

[ Oran/NASAChatHost - 90 - 10:59:50 ]
RE: [Renee-RENEE/EMORYUNIVERSITY] Thanks for the insight on NASA and the astronauts. It has been a pleasure.
Renee, we're glad you could join us today and hope you can be with us for our next Space Team Online chat!

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 92 - 11:02:04 ]
RE: [AJ-Linda/J.T.FosterSchool] Do you enjoy working at N.A.S.A?
Yes, I enjoy working for NASA very much, especially here at the Kennedy Space Center. KSC sits on 155,000 acres of a National Wildlife Refuge. There are alligators, manatees, American Bald Eagles and all kinds of exotic birds out here. It is truly beautiful. All that and Florida too!!!

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 94 - 11:02:39 ]
RE: [AJ-Linda/J.T.FosterSchool] Thanks and good-bye from Nanton.
Your welcome! Good bye!

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 95 - 11:03:08 ]
RE: [Oran/NASAChatHost] Thank you for joining us today, J.T. Foster School. We hope you can join us again!
You are very welcome I enjoy it a lot!

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 96 - 11:04:13 ]
RE: [MrsWatkinson-Watkinson/SMGMTA] If you could go anywhere in space that you wanted to, where would it be?
Right now I would love to go to Mars! My car license plates read...2MARS. I want to know if life really existed there or not.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 97 - 11:05:42 ]
RE: [Kelley-Kelley/InglenookElementary] Did any of your training occur at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville?
No I have never been to Marshall. I am looking forward to going there though because there is so much space history there, and I love space history!

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 103 - 11:16:49 ]
RE: [MrsWatkinson-Watkinson/SMGMTA] We are trying to figure out how old you are by reading your biography clues. We know that you are older than 35, and probably 40 or 41. We would like to know, if growing up you had any advantages or disadvantages because you are African American and grew up during some very turbulent times? Thank you for staying until 2:30 eastern time.
Your guess is RIGHT-ON!!! I am 40 will be 41 in April. I grew up in Ohio went to catholic schools until the 10th grade. I was blessed in that even before desegregation, my school had a very good mix. I had a lot of white, black and even a few Hispanic friends growing up. In answer to your other question...I don't believe that you can be any minority and NOT have to suffer through some degree of racism even today...let alone 20-30 years ago! I was blessed in that I was able to see at a very early age, that there are some people who are just plain ignorant. I don't mean that they are necessarily stupid...they have just inherited bigotry from their parents and extended family, and don't know anything better. Many have never had any close friends who were minorities. Many just have inferiority complexes and therefore they try to compensate by downing others. I learned all of this early so I was always able to overcome these barriers with hard work (out performing others), logic, and thick skin. Names have yet to ever hurt me! :) I have always found that if you are persistent and perform at an above average level, you can achieve despite racism and bigotry. You just have to fight for it more often then non-minorities. Great question

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 104 - 11:19:14 ]
RE: [MrsWatkinson-Watkinson/SMGMTA] My students would like to know if: You have ever been to space camp? You tell your daughter about the animals you see at KSC? If Mars is also your favorite planet (we think that there might be a difference between your favorite and the one that you want to go to).
Have never been to space camp. Would have loved to have gone if they had it when I was a kid...but they didn't...and even if they did...I wouldn't have been able to afford it! Think it is great and highly recommend it to kids and families who are interested in space!

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 106 - 11:22:21 ]
RE: [Kelley-Kelley/InglenookElementary] How many members are paramedics on your staff and is there a name for your team to respond should there be a problem at launch or after launch?
We probably have about 20 paramedics on staff out here at KSC. We have no special names...only the Emergency Medical Services System for Space Shuttle (EMSS)

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 107 - 11:23:15 ]
RE: [Jeff-Aron/Homeschool] Have you ever gone to space camp when you were little?
Never went to space camp. Would love to take my daughter one day though!!!

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 109 - 11:23:58 ]
RE: [Aztecs-students/MontgomeryHigh] wen are they going back to space?
Our next flight is scheduled for April 2nd.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 110 - 11:26:42 ]

My daughter is 27 months old going on 5 years!!! :) I share as much as I can with her of my experiences up here at KSC. My favorite planet to look at in a telescope is Jupiter. My favorite planet to learn more about is Saturn and it's many interesting moons.

[ Oran/NASAChatHost - 112 - 11:28:36 ]
RE: [Kelley-Kelley/InglenookElementary] Thank you for your time, honesty, and responses. Come on up to Alabama. We are in Birmingham. Huntsville is full of space history that you will enjoy. We will share your answers with our school. Thanks NASA for sponsoring this during Black History Month.
Kelley, we're very glad you and your students could join us today. We hope to hear from you again at our upcoming Space Team Online chats!

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 113 - 11:29:08 ]
RE: [MrsWatkinson-Watkinson/SMGMTA] Do you know of any plans to put a space station on the moon?
Well, we will soon be launching the first part of our International Space Station, which will orbit our planet. There is a lot of talk about setting up a permanent base on the moon. Makes a lot of sense to me...but it is mostly talk right now. Not enough money in NASA's limited budget!

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 116 - 11:33:35 ]

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 123 - 11:43:09 ]
RE: [MrsWatkinson-Watkinson/SMGMTA] What do you like to do when you aren't working?
#1 these days is spending time with my daughter and wife. I work a lot and am away a lot, so I really do enjoy just hanging out with my family and our two German Shepherds (Apollo and Mercury). My daughter's mane is Gemini! My wife "signed off" on it :) I also enjoy fishing, watching and playing most sports, especially golf (nowadays). I also enjoy talking to kids, and I do quite a bit of mentoring and public speaking.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 128 - 11:46:10 ]
RE: [Jeff-Aron/Homeschool] How is the air and water kept pure in the space shuttle?
There are air filters and water filters and purification systems onboard the Orbiters. We test everything many times before and during flight. Even when workers are working on the Orbiters on the ground, they wear clean-suits to prevent particles, dirt, and bacteria from being deposited in the Orbiters

[ Oran/NASAChatHost - 130 - 11:47:49 ]
RE: [MrsWatkinson-Watkinson/SMGMTA] We have to go now, Dr. Martin, but we wanted to thank you for staying on so long and answering all our questions! We would LOVE for you to come up to Tennessee and visit us some time, but we will understand if you can't. Mrs. Watkinson's class
Thank you very much for joining us today, Mrs. Watkinson. We hope you can join us again!

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 132 - 11:50:13 ]
RE: [MrsWatkinson-Watkinson/SMGMTA] We have to go now, Dr. Martin, but we wanted to thank you for staying on so long and answering all our questions! We would LOVE for you to come up to Tennessee and visit us some time, but we will understand if you can't. Mrs. Watkinson's class
My pleasure, I enjoy things like this a lot. You must get with Oran and maybe we can work out something as far as me visiting. Give him your information and we can try to work something out...but unfortunately I can't make a promise. Thanks to you and your class for your interest. Tell all of your students to study hard, so they can come work for NASA during the next century!!!

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 133 - 11:52:43 ]
RE: [Jeff-Aron/Homeschool] If you are prone to motion sickness could you still be an astronaut?
Yes, There is actually very little correlation between space motion sickness and other ground based types of motion sickness. Many people who get sick in jets down here have no problem in space...and many fighter-jocks who never get sick in their jets, get sick up in space. So yes you won't be disqualified for motion sickness

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 136 - 11:59:45 ]
RE: [James-James/WestPointSchools] How is space medicine different from regular medicine?
That is a very difficult question to answer in a few sentences. Space Medicine is very diverse. It deals with human physiology changes brought about by microgravity. It also deals with providing for all of the necessary supplements to ensure human can survive in the hostile environment of space. Life support systems, air, water, waste management, pressure temperature, radiation exposure, etc.. It also deals with taking care of the human body if something goes wrong and an astronaut gets sick in space.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 145 - 12:11:33 ]
RE: [Jeff-Aron/Homeschool] How does weightlessness affect the cardiovascular system?
There are a number of early changes in the Cardiovascular system after insertion into orbit. The biggest change starts when they are still on the launch pad. The fluid shifts from down in the legs to up into the torso. You lose a very significant amount of fluid in the first few days. When you come back you have the tendency to be a bit dizzy because of this fluid loss. Every once in a while someone gets really disoriented when they return.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 146 - 12:13:19 ]
RE: [jeff-Aron/Homeschool] Are you in charge of the astronauts exercising in space
No there are specially trained people at Johnson Space Center who take care of the exercise protocols.

[ Oran/NASAChatHost - 150 - 12:17:51 ]
RE: [Jeff-Aron/Homeschool] I have to leave now - thanks for the chat and all of the great information! I hope to get a hard copy of the entire session to put into my chat folder. Thank You again!!
Jeff, thanks so much for joining us today. Please join us again if you can.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 151 - 12:19:09 ]
RE: [Aztecs-students/MontgomeryHigh ] What is the most enjoyable part of your job?
I enjoy working with the astronauts. I enjoy learning and talking about space medicine. I enjoy just driving around on Kennedy Space Center, and seeing all of the cool things we are doing out here. I enjoy watching the launches and landings, and helping out when I can.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 152 - 12:20:23 ]
RE: [Jeff-Aron/Homeschool] I have to leave now - thanks for the chat and all of the great information! I hope to get a hard copy of the entire session to put into my chat folder. Thank You again!!
You are very welcome. Thank you for your interest! Good luck!

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 153 - 12:22:44 ]
RE: [Aztecs-students/MontgomeryHigh] When you were in the military, what was your job in missiles?
First, I am still in the Air Force. I am on loan to NASA on a special assignment which will end later this year. I worked as a missile launch officer for 4 and 1/2 years, on the Minuteman II missile weapon system.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 157 - 12:27:12 ]
RE: [MrsWatkinson-Watkinson/SMGMTA] What is your main goal in life?
Good question???? :) Well I would like to be an astronaut and explore and do research in space. I would love to go to Mars and explore that planet. Yet, my main goal is to use that background to have a better platform to go around and get people interested in science and the space program, because I believe that that is where our future is!

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 160 - 12:30:30 ]
RE: [OrionGroup-KarenJ.Massey] Hi! We are second graders in Fort Worth, Texas. Our group question is "Is it possible to give shots in space?'
Yes, shots are being given on most missions

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 162 - 12:34:20 ]
RE: [jeff-Aron/Homeschool] do you ever use homeopathic or naturopathic treatments [like echinecea or herbal remedies] for the astronauts.
No not to my knowledge.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 164 - 12:41:43 ]
RE: [Aztecs-students/MontgomeryHigh] What do you do when you work as one of the launch team?
I help coordinate and communicate with the many forces that make up the Emergency Medical Services System in place for Space Shuttle.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 165 - 12:43:06 ]
RE: [jeff-Aron/Homeschool] What illnesses do the astronauts experience most in space?
Very good question! headaches, back pain, nausea, disorientation, loss of sleep are the main ones.

[ GeorgeMartin/KSC - 167 - 12:49:26 ]
RE:[AJ-Linda/J.T.FosterSchool] Have you ever had second thoughts about your occupation?
Well I re-evaluate my goals frequently, and actually I never really wanted to be a physician early on in life. I have never regretted my interest in Space though. I also really like being an Emergency Medicine physician.
