The Internet Workshop
What is the Internet Workshop?
It is a concept developed by Dr. Donald Leu at Syracuse
University.
Most important it is a model for busy teachers
with Internet access but not a lot of time to plan for its use in the
classroom.
The Internet Workshop fosters student exploration of the Internet to
learn search, research and reporting skills. Internet access from within
the classroom, or during a lab session, is viewed as an activity center.
Students are assigned to engage a set of specific Internet resources and
are encouraged to report on what they learn.
The Internet Workshop is:
A regularly scheduled time when students use the Internet and report
what they learn.
A tool used by teachers to support students' ability to acquire information
from the Internet.
An opportunity for students to think critically about the information
they obtain.
During Internet Workshop:
Students share what they have learned using the Internet.
Students ask questions about content and search issues they do not
understand.
Students use the Internet to seek information to help them in upcoming
work.
Internet Workshop provides:
A perfect opportunity to make explicit the many "hidden" strategies
we use to comprehend and analyze written information, strategies that
often apply in books, articles, and other traditional texts as well as
on the Internet.
An opportunty to engage children in discussions about learning and
comprehension and can thus become a central part of your instructional
program.
Internet Workshop content will vary widely but does share several
common characteristics:
The nature of Internet Workshop differs depending on the teacher and
the students who use it.
It takes place during a regular time period, usually at the beginning
or the end of the week.
A regularly scheduled time period allows all members to anticipate
the session and prepare for it.
The Internet Workshop provides opportunities for both you and your
students to share navigation strategies as well as content information.
Internet Workshop provides an important opportunity for everyone to
learn from one another and the Internet information they find.
