PRESS RELEASE In honour of Canada's National Space Day, the first astronaut crew for the Canadian Student Space Station Simulator, (CS4), will be announced. The crew will be available for photos and interviews at St. Peter High School, Orleans, Ontario, on Friday afternoon, from 1:50pm to 3:00pm on October 16,1998. CS4: The Canadian Student Space Station Simulator initiative involves a student built mockup of a habitat for the International Space Station. The project features such technologies as Internet based communications, robotics and remote control, weather data collection and analysis, biomedical monitoring and a virtual reality 'habitat' designed for international school cooperation. The CS4 project is designed to provide technology students with experience in working on a major engineering project, and to highlight career opportunities available to them as the 21st century approaches. Last year's students designed and built the habitat, while this year's students have been busy preparing it for overnight stays. On Canada's National Space Day,the first "astronaut" crews will be selected. The first crew will then bebusy preparing for the first habitations, currently scheduled for the weekend of November 6, 1998. The first crew is scheduled to be filmed by a local production company for an episode in an upcoming series on the Discovery Channel, called Life In Space. The International Space Station, (ISS), is a multinational project involving a decade long construction of a permanent human habitation in space. In November of this year, the first module of the International Space Station will be launched from Russia. Canadians will be major players in this huge undertaking, providing their expertise in robotic devices in deploying the Canadian Mobile Servicing Platform in 1999. The ISS is a significant and international effort that not only portends a bright future for Canadian engineers, scientists and technologists, but also provides a spark to light the fire of student imagination. Not since the days of the Apollo moon missions has the exploration of space provided such a platform to educate students on the potential for career opportunities in science and engineering. The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) is the federal government body responsible for managing the Canadian Space Station Program and Canada's contribution to the International Space Station.
