Brown Headquarters, Washington, DC June 16, 1999 (Phone: 202/358-1726) RELEASE: 99-71 NASA SELECTS KEY SPACE FLIGHT MANAGERS NASA Associate Administrator for Space Flight Joseph Rothenberg has announced several management changes, effective immediately, in the Office of Space Flight at NASA Headquarters, Washington, DC. William Readdy, former Director for Space Shuttle Requirements, has been appointed Deputy Associate Administrator for the Office of Space Flight. His primary duty will be to handle the day-to-day management of personnel and program activities. Readdy is a veteran of three space flights: STS-42 in 1992, STS-51 in 1993 and STS-79 in 1996. He remains on flight status and is eligible for future Space Shuttle missions. Michael Hawes, formerly NASA's chief engineer for the space station, has been named Deputy Associate Administrator for Space Development (Space Station). Hawes' primary duties will include directing the space station budget, establishing and implementing station policy, coordinating external communications and serving as liaison to the Administration, Congress, industry and NASA's international partners. Hawes joined NASA in 1978 and served as the manager of utilization and operations in the former space station office in Reston, VA. Before that, he served in several technical and managerial positions at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX. He has coordinated the integration of payloads on the Space Shuttle, served as Payload Officer for several Shuttle missions and was a member of the mission control team for the re-entry of Skylab in 1979. Norm Starkey has been named Director for Space Shuttle Requirements. His primary duties will include directing the Space Shuttle budget, establishing and implementing Shuttle policy, coordinating external communications and serving as liaison to the Administration, Congress, industry and NASA's international partners. Starkey returns to the Office of Space Flight after serving as the Executive Director for the Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel since August 1996. -end-
