Meet: Jan Simpson
Assistant Astronomer
UC Berkeley & NASA Ames Research Center, Mt.View, CA
What I do (asked
in 1996)
I am an assistant astronomer at University of California, Berkeley. In addition,
I work in the Astrophysics Branch at NASA/Ames where I do research in airborne
and space astronomy.
My education
I have a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in Astronomy.
My motivation
I am very interested in all sorts of science, but I find astronomy to be especially
fascinating.
My goals for next year
I'm planning to do research on the abundances of the elements nitrogen, oxygen,
neon, sulfur, and argon in our galaxy, and how these abundances are affected by
the history, structure, and chemical evolution of our galaxy.
A bit about me
My husband also has a PhD. in astronomy and our 14-year-old son is also very interested
in science, especially paleontology. Our family vacations usually are camping
trips, and often involve collecting fossils (not dinosaurs!).
