Christine

christine photo Not long ago, I saw a Toyota ad in a magazine, and I liked it so much that I had to rip it out and keep it. Unlike most advertisements, this one really stood out for me because it offered some truly invaluable advice. It read: "I want to appreciate the times when moments are made into memories. I want to embrace them. Cherish them. And never forget they come so few and far between. I know that wherever life takes me, these moments will always follow. They remind me of what's truly important. It's not just life--but living. It's the journey, the destination and all points in between..." Although I found it rather amusing that a car advertisement could be so deep, I took these words seriously and have never forgotten them. I try to remember that it is the process of life, not just the end result, that is important.

Whew! Now that I've imparted my Toyota's words of wisdom, I'll tell you more about myself. No, I'm not some ancient sage that sits around all day pondering the meaning of life. I'm 16 years old and a junior in high school. My name is Christine, but some of my friends call me "Chewy."

While not stressing over my immense workload (it is junior year after all!), I spend my time doing lots of fun extracurriculars. For example, I'm involved in student government as one of two community service coordinators for my class. For me, this activity provides a happy medium between planning fun events for my class and helping my community as well. In addition, I participate in many publishing activities and am a section head for both the school newspaper and yearbook.

Every year, my favorite subject in school is whatever science course I'm taking. In pursuing my love of science, I worked at a biochemistry lab at Stanford last summer. At the lab, I made backup copies of yeast strains for a project designed to map the genome of the yeast cell. My most recent foray into science is joining the Young Women of NASA Advisory Council. I am interested in exploring all scientific disciplines, and, as I have not had much experience with space exploration, I hope to learn more about this field.
