Lisa
Hi, I'm Lisa. I have always regretted having a name
with only four letters since none of my nicknames are any shorter than what
I started with, but that's life. I don't bug my parents about it too much
since Lisa is much better than some of the other names they had considered
giving me...Anyway, I am 16 years old and a junior in high school. I have
always been drawn to the sciences. Currently, I am really into genetics,
neurobiology and archaeology (which some might say is not a science, but
I disagree). I also like writing short stories and studying ancient history.
My interests seem to keep changing, and I am never exactly sure what I am the most interested in. I am just doing my best to keep my options open and learn as much as I can about anything and everything that interests me. I hope that I will eventually end up with a career that combines many of my interests, both in the sciences and other fields. One of the coolest things that I have ever done was at UC San Francisco. I visted the college with a lot of other teenagers interested in science. We got to learn about the brain, how it works, and, most importantly, how much we do NOT know. I also got to look at and handle mouse, rat, and human brains. It is amazing how simliar we all are. More recently, I have spent a lot of my time volunteering at the local Habitat for Humanity construction site. Habitat for Humanity is an international organization that helps people build their own houses and provides a way for people to own the homes. I've shingled roofs, build fences, debugged a sprinkler syster, learned to read blue prints, and gotten a pretty bad farmer's tan. Oh well, it is well worth it. I've met lots of cool people and when I drive by the houses I can see what I have done. The more stuff I get exposed to, the harder it becomes to decide what my primary interests are! I have three younger siblings (two brothers and a sister) and spend a lot of my time babysitting. Being around little kids so much has given me a different perspective on life and reminded me of some the important things in life that I would have otherwise forgotten to appreciate as I grew older. Things like board games, sand boxes, and bubbles are still great fun, very entertaining, and relaxing. I am excited to be a part of Young Women of NASA Advisory Council and hope that we are really making a difference to girls interested in science. Science is such an awesome field; there is so much room for us to learn more answers and ask more questions.
