RE: [Tish/NASAChatHost] We
are sorry for the delay but just finished up the webcast. Kim is on and
we are ready now to take question. Welcome Kim Can you tell us about your
day so far today?
Well, today I've been busy doing some programming. I've been working with
two other project team members on our ScienceOrganizer application.
[ KimH - 9 - 14:10:26 ]
RE: [Gwen/PHS] Will you stay at this career?
Hi Gwen, Yes, I think so. I really enjoy developing computer applications.
[ KimH - 10 - 14:12:00 ]
RE: [Alisha] What is your 'Science Organizer application?
Hi Alisha, ScienceOrganizer is a tool to help scientists share data with
each other. It runs in a web browser to make it easy for any registerd
user to access this tool.
[ KimH - 11 - 14:12:48 ]
RE: [unknown] H Kim - What do you do at Ames right
now? What type of research are you working on?
Hi, I'm a computer engineer. I develop software in support of collaborative
systems research.
[ KimH - 19 - 14:15:31 ]
RE: [Gwen/PHS] What role models did you have growing
up?
My principal role models growing up were my mother and grandmother. They
both raised me and my five sisters. They had to work very hard to make
sure we all got a good education. They always provided us with lots of
love and encouragement. From them I learned the value of working hard
to achieve one's goals.
[ KimH - 20 - 14:18:02 ]
RE: [Alisha] Hi Kim - What have your favorite projects
been?
I've really enjoyed working on the WNE experiment in which three computer
operated on the Space Shuttle and the Mir space station using a wireless
local area network. I also enjoy working on my current project, ScienceDesk.
[ unknown - 21 - 14:18:27 ]
When can we get the trading card?
[ KimH - 22 - 14:20:19 ]
RE: [Clarie] What diferent types of engineering
jobs are there?
There are more engineering jobs than I can probably name right now. These
include civil, mechanical , chemical, electrical, and computer engineering.
[ Tish/NASAChatHost - 23 - 14:20:34
]
Don't forget to stay online to get the trading card address. We will reveal
it later today.
[ Tish/NASAChatHost - 24 - 14:21:29

You can see the astroventure web site at: http://astroventure.nasa.gov
[ KimH - 25 - 14:23:18 ]
RE: [Marie/SHS] How does your work relate to missions?
What is mission critical work?
Hi Marie, The "mission" of my work right now is to develop software that
demonstrates how well various ideas we are researching really work. We
at NASA work on various sorts of missions that range from research and
development to the space missions you read about or see on TV.
[ KimH - 26 - 14:24:44 ]
RE: [Felicia] We just heard that the launch scrubbed>
What does that mean?
Hi Felicia, When a launch is scrubbed, it means it's been postponed usually
due to bad weather or a problem that's been discovered at the last minute.
[ KimH - 27 - 14:26:13 ]
RE: [MrsSmithsclass] Could you do yoru work at
any of te other center?
Hi, Yes, I would have to apply for an available job and move to that center
if I got the job
[ KimH - 28 - 14:28:12 ]
RE: [Alisha] Can other people use the science browser?
Right now we're only working with a small group scientists here at NASA/Ames.
Our ScienceOrganizer tool is still relatively new. We still have lots
of work to do.
[ KimH - 35 - 14:31:58 ]
RE: [unknown] What kinds of data do scientists
share? IS this text? Do you write software code?
Scientists share data from there experiments which may be from various
areas or biology, chemistry or whatever their scienctific specialty is.
The data may be text documents or spreadheet of statistics, or even graphical
data. Yes,I write code. Currently I mostly program using Java, but I also
use Perl and HTML.
[ KimH - 36 - 14:32:57 ]
RE: [unknown] Why don't you go to one of those
startups?
I like the working environment here at NASA.
[ KimH - 37 - 14:35:04 ]
RE: [unknown] Would yu recommend yoru career for
anyone else? Do you liek working for the government?
I think computer engineering and software devleopment is a fine career

We'll be ending this chat in just a few minutes so please let Kim answer
the posted questions. Thank you again for joining us. REmember you can

RE: [Alice] How did you get selected for the trading
card?
One of the developers of the AstroVenture project asked if I was interested
in participating. Since I'm not a professional sports person, I thought
this would be the only way I'd ever be on a trading card.
