[SCHEDULE] [PROFILES] [OVERVIEW] [CURRICULUM]

Overview
Women of NASA and our Young Women of NASA Advisory Council present an all day series of chats, forums, and webcasts featuring select female leaders from a broad spectrum of professions within NASA. These female role models are involved in a variety of careers that include launching the Space Shuttle, processing Shuttle hardware, payload experiments, and mission critical work. Join these scientists and engineers as they meet with hundreds of students, parents, and schools worldwide to discuss and celebrate opportunities, as well as gain insight into the professional and personal aspects of their lives.

Featured events include video interviews of NASA women conducted by our Young Women of NASA representatives when the visited Kennedy Space Center for the recent STS106 launch. Our young women will present their perspectives of science, math, and engineering careers and what it takes to succeed in these disciplines. Women of NASA is now working in collaboration with Astro-Venture, a new interactive, educational Web site where students in grades 5-8 role-play NASA occupations, as they search for and build a planet habitable to humans. Students can access an Astro-Venture career fact sheet and trading card for many of the women featured on this day. The secret location of the trading cards will only be revealed during the interactive events.

Participants may interact with our NASA women through Chats, Webcasts, or the Forum - moderated and hosted by our Young Women of NASA. The live Chats will feature one select woman each hour on the hour from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. PT / 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. ET and do not require preregistration. The Forum is open throughout the day from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. PT / 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. ET and will feature a panel of women from Kennedy Space Center who are involved in various components of Space Shuttle processing and launch. Registration is not necessary for the Forum and you may join in when it is most convenient. An observation room is also available for both the Chat and Forum. The Webcasts offer live streaming video and a chat room component for interaction. All dialogue will be archived and available as a link from the featured women's profile and the schedule page. Please be sure to research the featured mentors and prepare for the technologies used prior to joining the events. Complete directions and links can be found on the schedule page.

The Back to School Special is comprised of four interrelated components:

  • Research and Preparation
Profiles and biographies of the featured women are available for research prior to the event, and can be found by linking from the featured woman's name on the schedule or on the profiles page. You are strongly encouraged to research the featured women prior to the chats in order to form appropriate questions that cannot be answered by another source. Archives and links to additional interactive events and resources are also included in their profiles. Video profiles filmed by our Young Women offer their perspectives of these women. RealPlayer is required to view them and links are provided to download. Curriculum and a Web Chat Lesson to do before, during and after these events is also available online or as downloadable PDF files. Acrobat Reader Plug-in plug-in is required to download.
  • Preregistration
Preregistration for the Chats is not required for this day. Due to the high interest in this day we will have many participants. The number of students able to submit questions live during the chat is not limited, but the chat is moderated and we will post questions as the expert is ready. Our experts will do their best to answer as many questions as they can. The most thoughtful and prepared questions will be chosen first. Therefore, once you have researched the featured women and have decided which chat(s) you wish to participate in, go to the schedule page. There are specific chat directions that you should become familiar with prior to the chats.
  • Interacting
To chat, in the Forum or Webchats, click on the "join us" link. You will go directly to the chat room. Chat rooms open 5 minutes before the event. The Forum will remain open throughout the day and you may post or read answers at any time. The Webcasts require you to have RealPlayer on you computer. Links to download are provided on the event pages.
  • Follow-up
All contents and information from these pages and this event will be archived and available as a link from the Women of NASA archives page. The archived chats and profiles are a rich source of information when studying careers, gender equity, women's issues, and information specific to each woman's profession. Teaching tips on how you may use this event and the Women of NASA project are available on our teaching tips page.
